This.

I know it sucks but it's not a faulty part if something external hit the car to cause the damage. I was driving on the highway when something popped up and broke one of the horizontal plastic pieces inside the brake vent scoops on the front bumper. It's not BMWs fault that it broke so I'm on the hook for it.

That's true it's just unfortunate and my point is that the car came like that when I bought it I know I can't prove that so I'm on the hook for it.

File with your insurance, if you have a low enough deductible, for your portion.

Generally if it is considered a collision claim, the deductible would be much higher than if it is covered under comprehensive. But it can't hurt to check with your agent to find out. Just make sure that this claim won't negatively affect your premiums.

Yes, you're correct. It comes down to the insurance policy wording and what they would consider it.

Also according to how the insurance company does business, a claim may or may not increase premiums.
Typically, the portion of the premium that can go up is the portion that the claim is placed in.

I made a claim years ago on hail damage. Deduct was $250, insurance wrote me a check for $1000. Premium stayed the same.
I didn't have any claims prior to that and the car was about 7 years old.

Yeah, not worth the claim at $400 if you deduct is about the same.
If I had a $500 repair bill and a $250 deduct, I'd make the claim, but that's just me. I'll use my insurance, after all I pay for it.
