2009 iDrive Quick Reference Guide (PDF inside)

When I picked up my car a few weeks ago, I noticed that it came with an iDrive Quick Reference Guide. I thought this would be useful for those curious about the basic operations of the new-for-2009 iDrive, and a quick search suggests that it hasn't already been posted, so I've scanned it and attached the PDF The scan is not the best quality, but it is still readable.

Note that this guide does not seem to be specific to the 1 Series, as in the first screenshot on page 14 it shows the "L7 Surround" option, along with the Logic 7 logo. Neither of these two things are present on my car, which has the premium sound option.

Enjoy!

Thanks!

On page 12 it shows a 3D building. When we were in Hohenschwangau two weeks ago the Neuschwanstein castle showed up in 3D on the side of the mountain.

The 3D feature is definitely very cool, I think it'd be very useful when navigating around an unfamiliar area, because you can locate said building for reference. On my daily commute, all I see is...well, just the map and no buildings.

The rest of the iDrive instructions are in the main owner's manual for the car - there is an iDrive and a non-iDrive version of the manual. On bmwusa.com (http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/owner/dgh.aspx) you can download the "with iDrive" version of the manual for the 2009 3 Series, and you'll see all the nitty-gritty details on how to work the iDrive. For some reason, for the 2009 1 Series, they only have the non-iDrive version of the manual, thus the need to grab the 3 Series version - the iDrive is 99% the same for both.

Now, the 3D mapping is only in Germany? I tried several setting and made sure I am in the prespective 3D mode, I see NO building in my metro area. Can anyone confirm that? Thank you.

I haven't seen any buildings yet either in southern California.

The 3D buildings are there in the North American version.... driving around in Boston shows a few buildings (Bank North Garden, the Prudential building). Seems to be a bit hit or miss with only a few "landmarks" showing up on screen.

We just got back from a Euro Delivery of a 128i. Each night we used the BMW Routes site to plan the next days travel, including gas and lunch stops. In the morning we loaded the trip into the nav through the USB socket in the glove compartment and off we went. The BMW Routes site even let us override the suggested Autobahns and take some more scenic smaller roads. We never would have attempted some of the trips without the nav and without the planning capability.

Sorry for the re-animation of a Zombie thread.

But, I found out the "secret" to this issue. You need to make sure the "Traffic Info Map" settings is switched off. Fr some reason, POIs, night mode, and 3D buildings don't get rendered when the fancy colored traffic maps are on.

We were driving around downtown the other day, and it had the buildings all on the perspective view. Even had a good looking 3D model of LA City Hall.
