BP not on toptiergas list but BMW Aus recommends it?

Hey guys,

Recently it's come to me that BP is not actually on the top tier fuel list: http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html. However when I picked up my car at Sylvania BMW they recommend BP ultimate fuel.

Here it is on wikipedia as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Tie...rgent_Gasoline. But that is for US/Canada. At the bottome it says BP isn't on the list (but Ford recommends it. Mustangs vrrrm <3)

I just found this a little odd because I've only used BP Ultimate on my car as a result of their recommendation. Is BP Australia fuel different to BP USA fuel?

Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure somewhere on the manual or some BMW pamphlet it recommends BP 98 Octane Ultimate fuel as well so I'll continue using it !

Any thoughts?

Is that actually why it's not on the list? I was thinking about that too but I thought they it wouldn't take that into account when talking about the quality of the fuel.

But isn't a high level of detergency a great benefit for the car's engine?

I used to use Ultimate exclusively until BMW investigated an issue I had and found a layer of crud in the fuel tank. Now I only use Caltex Vortex.

It is stated in the 135i owner's manual that "BMW recommends BP Fuels".

I always use Caltex Vortex though due to convenience.

And yet my local dealership puts Caltex fuel into their cars.

Exactly what I've been told. I've heard Shell called Injector Killer a few times in other car clubs.

How much is known about the origin of fuels in Australia? For example, if you buy Shell, does it come from an Australian Shell refinery, one in Singapore, or is it refined in the nearest local refinery (whoever the owner is), or even schlepped in from an unknown overseas refinery? The same question could be asked of Caltex or BP fuels, as well. If your favourite brand is in fact refined by another company, do they spec. it to the brand, or is it all the same stuff simply re-branded at the pump?

Is there a website source where the true origin of Australian fuels is given? One thing for sure, our fuels are relatively high in sulfur. Sometimes I can smell the hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg gas) when a car burning high sulfur fuel is running rich, and I can smell the sulfur dioxide from other cars.

Sigh, I guess we'll never know. I'll switch to Caltex if any problems persist.

Although, last time I filled up at BP in Revesby, when I was waiting to turn right into M5 shortly after, my idle was REALLY bumpy. And I've heard bad fuel/gas sometimes causes this. After driving home though everything seemed fine.

What does "schlepped" mean?
