Does anyone have an idea of how many 1M’S are left in the US? I see a database for the UK, but not for the USA

There isn't anything as comprehensive (or open) as the data available in the UK. Unless you want to wade through the sea of data discrepancies across paid providers like Carfax and Autocheck, you can't get a great view. If you focus on the title information reported to NVMTIS, which has gotten better over the years but still has glaring omissions, you end up with these stats:

- 29 cars have salvage titles to date. Some of those were rebuilt and are back on the road. There have only been 6 new salvage reports in the last 5 years.

- Around 160 cars appear to remain with the original owner. These cars have current titles issued before 7/2012 and less than 100 reported miles.

- Since 2020, there have been 22 new titles issued with reported mileage under 10k.

- The highest mileage on a title was reported in 2021 with 181,162 miles.

As is often speculated, many of these cars are low mileage and are being "preserved" to various degrees in garages. So how many are left? I'd guess at least 700.

"Preservation in garages" sounds like these cars are being preserved as an investment which I think overstates reality.

I have around 35K miles on my second-owner 1M that I've owned for 8 years. I put maybe 2500 miles on it each summer, but don't drive it for the 6 months surrounding the winter. I have other fun cars to drive so it isn't like I'm avoiding using it.

Truth be told, most driving is boring and mundane, regardless of the vehicle. I only drive this car when I expect the drive to have the potential for being enjoyable. Most of the time this is when I'm going between 2 houses which takes 2.5 hours to do 155 miles, mostly through the mountains.

I'm not garaging this vehicle to keep it pristine for resale or for any other reason, just cognizant of the fact that BMWs are not cheap to own so why run up the cost and the miles driving in town on what will be a drudge of an experience no matter what vehicle I happen to be sitting in?

If you and your 1M ever venture up I-84 and find yourself in the TriCities area (wine tour perhaps?) definitely let me know! If your wife comes along even better. We will take you to the best places!

Our first one on order was supposed to be mine, but I let a customer have it. Unfortunately that was the only one we got!
Even more unfortunately, a tree fell on it while the owner was traveling down the road at around 60-mph. How unlucky can you get. Totaled, but not likely rebuilt. Hard to say. I should look it up.

I just got mine out of storage and will drive it to work about 20 times before my 718 GTS arrives in late January 2024. 38k miles and still a hoot. These cars deserve to be driven.

I didn't actually get a chance to drive the 1M very much this summer. My house was essentially destroyed by massive roof leaks, and I was forced to put the car into storage in a most uninteresting town where I could find a storage locker with outlets needed to keep the battery charged on a tender.

Maybe next year!

Yikes, that sounds awful! I hope next year is far better!
