Catless exhaust note

I currently have catless mid-pipes and wont be doing the dump-pipes until I can find a way to mitigate the shitty sound (IMO) of completely catless. I have other mods to do before I get to the muffler but I am interested to know what setups some of you running that reduce the terrible sound?

I like the black tips of the stock exhaust and was planning on keeping it but I really want to avoid attention and have a much quieter system (if its possible to do so without impacting on performance too much). I was thinking that if I was to remove the stock muffler I would go to a quad setup as it certainly more aesthetically pleasing but not sure if also too wanky? I have no interest in emulating the 1M in any way but like the look of those recent wrxs with quads.

Basically, if money wasnt an object and you wanted performance but with sleeper-ish stealth, what would you get.

You got to keep your resonator otherwise it will be too raspy, some people like it though - remind me of the E46 M3 sort off.

Check out my youtube video of my exhaust if you haven't AR Catless DP + Custom Catless Resonated Midpipes + BMW PE.

I am catless atm, Ar Downpipes, N55 mids and stock muffler (no golf tee - way to loud with the golf tee mod) and I think it sounds ok but much preferred the sound of the AR downpipes, N54 mids and the stock muffler with the golf tee mod. Sounded awesome from the outside and not so loud and noticable.

Enjoying the louder note atm but thinking of going back to N54 mids before the end of the year when I need to get a rego inspection....

Yeah, I remember your car from the dyno day. Its not a entirely bad sound but its just too loud for me. I'm a pretty boring kind of person and like the idea of staying under the radar and not attracting attention. I like the power though

The Maddad whisper muffler looks interesting.

Yep same, Wife keeps telling me its too loud... Not really liking the idea of attracting the wrong attention either.

I wonder how loud downpipes and Maddad whisper would be - could still be pretty loud.

I think most ppl at the dyno day were catless??

Edwin
Justin
Me
335 with black wheels
His mate with the red GTR

2 x 1M's and u had midpipes.

IMHO removing 1 set of cats makes the car sound really good but taking them all of sounds a bit full on for most but max power comes from this setup....

IMHO go downpipes and swap mids depending on whats going on...

I might have a play around with the vibration absorber on the muffler when I get home and see if it makes any difference. WHen I put a PE on the 125i ages ago, it was pretty bad at anything other than WOT. So I put an 86hz one on it instead of the stock 32hz and it made a noticeable improvement in tone (but obviously not volume). Probably wont work with this but worth a try.

Im wondering if putting resonators on the N55 mids where the cats are on the N54 mids may make it sound more like the awesome downpipe/catted downpipe sound.

Dunno really. No crazy on spending cash on the exhaust as not much power gain to be made post downpipes and it all gets expensive.

As in double resonator with the stock one in place? or just have on set of resonators

My resonator (2 x bottle resonator) on my midpipes are where the secondary cats used to be.

Sounds like a good idea, pretty much like combining the maddad mids and n55 mids. Next day off work, I might speak to the guy at my local muffler shop about it.

I'd be willing to try this assuming cost is not crazy. Really would like to loose the rasp.

Got 2 sets of mids and really long term I intend to go back to N54 mids - I can just increase the meth and boost to gain any power lost by the secondary cats.

Well, all they would have to do is cut the pipes and weld 2 pre-fab resonators. Its not like they would have to fabricate anything for it (at least I assume thats all there is to it). Cant be too pricey.

I am running CP-E mids and muffler with black tips, they just fit in the CF Diffuser cut out. At the moment it is loud enough that the wife refuses to get in the car. ( suits me fine ) have got the AR catless Dp's sitting in the garage. will post a video once i get time to fit the DP's.

My resonators was $150 each so it would be around $300 + labour.
