Arrow Wind noise above 180 kph...

A friend of mine(Florian) fixed a problem on his 135i taht I think we all have encountered: Wind noise at high speeds.

For Flo his wind noise starts around 180 kph and above. The fix was relatively cheap at 1,20€. You insert the fish tank hose - under the B-pillar gasket door seal. See pics. I think for anyone out of warranty, this is a GREAT tip/fix.

Use soapy water(mostly water with a few drops of dish washing soap) to make it easier to slide the green tube up inside the old B-pillar gasket. You only need ~50cm of tubing. Just enough for the vertical section of B-pillar.

13mm O.D fish tank hose. 1,20€ per meter

You can use some soapy water as a lube on the hose to make it easier to slide up inside the old gasket/seal.

Awesome idea! I actually get wind noise in that exact spot at anything above 100 or so if there is a head or cross wind.

Thanks!!!!!

I saw this as a fix on a TV show where they were fixing up and selling older cars. I hadn't yet looked at the 1er to figure out what kind of hose to get and where to buy it - thanks for saving me the trouble!

I'll be very happy if this fixes my wind noise issues...

Cheers,
Bryan

Wow , great thread and advice. Thanks... Seems there are a few of us with the same issue. Mine is exactly as MightyMouseTech describes..

Anything over 120km/h for me and again depending on windspeed/direction its more of a whistling sound right where the door lock thingy is, like there is a small gap to let wind in. Highly Annoying and just about gave up on a fix after many dealer visits.

Also noticed all our cars are lemans blue.. perhaps we are jinxed?

thank you- this worked nicely to reduce wind noise AND the squeak/rattling from my windows when driving across bumps.

Much appreciated!

Could this not also be done to the A pillar?

Simple and effective DIY, thx.

Would expect less noise reduction as the glass at the upper edge and A pillar is fully enclosed whereas the window along the B pillar can bend outwards freely at speed

The hose reportedly fits the upper edge seal; In the German Forum equivalent thread by Dack's friend, some-one is testing the resulting noise reduction currently.

Ill have to look into this. I'm going to assume all fish tank hoses are the same size correct?

Nope, there are a variety of sizes. I just took a ruler into a fish store and measured. The people that worked there had no clue what hose was what size.

I like this solution, a fix I've found is to use some silicone vacuum grease at the part of the seal where you think there is a leak. I'll try the tubing fix too.

A better way is to use a special 3M made powder spray-on. You spray onto say the door gasket seal, close the door.... and then open it back up and LOOK at the tracing of white powder. IF you see any gaps... that's where your leak is at.

Mattos or any 3M supplier(body shop supplier) sells this stuff.

IF you have a "helper" you can also use a US dollar bill... put it half way between the window and have your assistant, move the dollar bill in a sawing motion all around the window seal. When there is less resistance... take a close look at the door gasket there.

You can also see where the grease has made contact with the window as well (though the auto open of the window skews it a bit), I heard of that stuff you're talking about though but I figure most people have some grease lying around.
