How many will remove the run-flat tires?

Personally, I despise run-flat tires. So my first mod will be to change out the stock rubber with some nice regular tires mounted onto some new rims (still haven't decided which yet).

As for if I ever get a flat tire, I'll just keep a can of fix-a-flat in the tool bag I'll keep in the trunk. Works for my M3, it should work just fine for the 135i.

So who else is ditching the run-flats?

I've driven countless new BMWs with run-flats and I simply don't like the feel.

SSAM, drive your car without those harsh runflats on them and you'll quickly change your mind.

They certainly offer a modicum of peace of mind, but they are heavy and have no give to them. They make my e90 shudder going over substantial bumps, where non-runflats don't. Non-runflats smooth out the ride, cost less, offer way more tire choices, weigh quite a bit less, and grip a lot better.

RFTs have higher stiffness sidewalls which require compromise in the suspension tuning to achieve acceptable ride qualities.

BMW has stated that the current state of run-flat technology means that no M car will use run-flats, because the compromises to the suspension tuning would be too great for M cars.

Garage List
I'll probably do the same thing I did with the Run-Flats that came on my MINI. Run them until bald and then swap out with non-RF's

I am ditching them probably almost immediately for some regular tires, hopefully on some ultra light weight OZ ulraleggras.

Although I'm not a fan of RFs, I plan to do this as well. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to throw away ~ $1000 worth of new tires. Plus, the RFs might be useful for ED (unless I hit the "Ring" of course).

I will most likely have them off the car immediately. I've seen photoshops of a 135i with 335i rims and I want them. Hopefully the person selling 335i rims by then wont have RF on them.

How much more weight do run-flats add? I mean weren't they developed because of the weight and space extra tire needed? I rather have the good old spare tire in the back.

Depends on tire sizes and what you are comparing to. Most OEM tires end weighing about the same as the RFTs BMW fits to their cars. Of course, when you go to replace your tires, you get some real high performance tires that are probably 2 pounds lighter per tire.

I know the 225/40/18 and the 255/35/18 RE050a are 25lbs and 27lbs each, respectively. Expect close to the same on the 135i's runflats. I shaved about 7-9lbs each tire swithching to non-runflats, and about 10lbs per wheel replacing the stock wheels with lightweight ones.

It really depends on how they feel for a daily driving tire. I will be buying a second set of wheels for racing, so I need something for everyday use.

If I get a 135, I'll be changing them, just because I want something stickier. Something like a Yoko Advan AD07 at least.

The original ones will get sealed away and stored in the basement, then re-installed when I eventually sell the car. Just like I'm doing with my E46 now.

So you basically shaved 70+ lbs off your BMW? Is so that is pretty awesome. I'm going to drive that but hopeully it wont be at the expense of looks(the rims) or handling(the tires).

For me, the answer is: It depends.

When I got the MINI I planned from the beginning to replace the RFT's and OE wheels for the weight savings and performance advantages. The improved ride was a bonus. So for 42K I've been trusting in a can of Tire Slime and a cell phone. So far, so good.

I'll have to drive the 135 to see whether replacing the RFT's is important to me this time around. I expect that the technology is being improved and that at some point it will be acceptable right out of the box. Until then, I'll be buying conventional performance tires. I'll just have to wait and see.

I went with racing wheels and even wider 255's up front and 275's in back. Even including the me making the tires an incha wider all around, I shaved more than 20lbs a corner.

I'm ditching the runflats ASAP. They are a terrible idea. Runflats should be an available option for those who want them, but not mandatory.

I don't understand why BMW locks on to stupid ideas like runflats only, and idrive then refuses to admit their mistake and let go of the nonsense, particularly after years of backlash and dissatisfaction. Wake up BMW...regular tires, touchscreen navigation.

While we're on counterintuitive BMW stuff. Put an oil dipstick back on my engine. That's great that I can check the oil level on the multi function display, but its no reason to delete the dipstick.

Oh yeah, once you dump the idrive...you got room to put the window switches back on the center console where they belong. I'd love to have an in-depth discussion with the fool who decided to abandon the BMW design language/ergonomics that made the car such an icon through the 80's and 90's.

I'll either have 162's (E90 Sport Wheels), or CSL wheels with rubber (Probably Azenis RT615's) ready to go after I pick the car up, I want to keep the run flats and OEM wheels in perfect shape for resale and/or BMW CPO...
