Square dilemma and staggered choices

Yes I've been searching. I just bought a 2011 135i (w00t) and among a few other simple mods I want to get a new set of wheels for the spring (snow tires are on the stock wheels). I just sold an e90 with enkie rajin which I liked, but I want to try something different. I'm plan to order wheels and tires from tire rack so my options are a bit limited.
It brings me to my dilemma. According to you all the square setup give a more neutral, natural handling. That sounds cool, the car will be used as a second car for enjoyment mostly, possibly commuting and possibly a long shot at an autoX. The oz ultraleggera in bronze is my top pick now. It's an 18x8 40. Is there any chance a 225/45 or 235/40 will fit in the stock front? Is the back going to look tucked in or flush with the same offset? Is a 225/40 (i'm 99% sure it will fit without rubbing) too narrow for a tuned car?

Those who have tried staggered and flush, how much of a difference does it make? Is staying with a 245 in the back the best choice or are you all going 255?

In case any of you all who viewed this thread and didn't reply were wondering, 235/40/18 et40 fits nicely on all corners on an otherwise stock car.

I went with APEX wheels, running staggered 245/265. You will need some kind of camber plate in the front to run that wide. Improve the handling by increasing front grip, don't decrease rear grip.

We run that setup on an M235i that sees a ton of track time at work, and while it does clear, I'm not a fan. Very tail happy, doesn't put the power down coming out of corners (stock power, dinan camber plates, LSD).

We run square just to be able to rotate tires and keep consumables down, it's a compromise.

Exactly. Show me a single RWD racecar that does not run a staggered setup, unless required by the rules.

It doesn't apply to every RWD platform... If you can fit a lot of tire up front square works great. Miata's, e46's, etc.. But when you are limited it's not always a good choice to sacrifice rear grip.

AutoX or HPDE

Don't mean to threadjack, OP. Just a question.

I have 17" D-Force 40mm with 245's. I'm getting back into a 135 soon, I hope and want to run those square. I'm told it will work on a stock setup but with a spacer.

Can anyone confirm?

Frankly I'm not driving a racecar. I spend A LOT of time at the track, in fact I'm a licensed, expert, road racer (not that it matters) but, it's on 2 wheels. I'm not convinced that 10 mm width is going to effect the grip any more than 10 other things. But, matching the wheels and tire's will make the car a bit more neutral in everyday driving and on the very slight chance I do track it, sacrificing ultimate grip for a bit more tail wagging seems worth it.

Anyway all that said It maven not have been the right or smartest choice. The ease of rotating tires and the hope of having something that handles like a BRZ with more power justified it in my head.

This

I was tired of using 2 sets of rears for every set of fronts then having that tire discontinued, or having the size no long be offered. Also, when I found out I could upsize the fronts with the stock rears + spacers I went for it because it was cheap and effective. I also just wanted more front grip in general and going for a larger rear tire is an extra set of special offset wheels and more $$$ in general

There are a few threads on fitting OEM rear wheels/tires on the front. That is the route I'd recommend. 245/43r18 all around seems like a better compromise. Example:
