I never understood the fasination with SUVs (BMWs or otherwise) either. Guess some things are over my head.

For my wife driving a SUV has been a safety issue (or perceived safety). We live in the country and she has hit deer twice on the way to work, once in a 4 Runner and once in her Highlander. Both times pretty serious damage to the outside of the vehicle, none to her. I can't imagine what a deer would do to our 135 convertible. Not a pretty sight. But, as I suggested in my original post, after driving the 135 a few days she is a crazed woman who no deer would dare mess with.

Smithtravel hit the nail squarely on the head with his choice of roads. I grew up ten miles from State College, and today live an hour away (Clearfield). All of the above roads are excellent choices, and are spectacular in the fall.
If you are a hunter, or a gun person, the Grice Gun Shop (PA's largest) is in Clearfield. These are certainly the kind of roads that you can appreciate a car like a BMW on. |

It's just so simple: 1) Inertia!! 2) Tensile strength/rigidity 3) The best way to survive an accident is to NOT get in the accident in the first place. On all three of these, I would take a 1Series any day. I put my wife in a Mini for the same reason. That car is so incredibly small and nimble, she can literally avoid any accident. I always liked Mini, and when my wife said she thought they were cute, I jumped at the chance to get her into one. I saw one get out of a typical "no way to avoid this accident" situation. It was boxed between trucks, and the truck in front of it dumped a load of scrap metal on the road. The Mini whipped around the garbage and didn't skip a beat. Me, I was still in my big fat pig of a E90 about 6 car lengths back and let me tell you, I had to do some quick work, even with AWD, to save my own skin. God help me if I was in some crappy SUV with the tensile strength of tin foil! Let alone that if you hit a deer, it doesn't matter what you drive, it will be destroyed, I have seen way too many cases of this in NH and Maine, especially with moose. So you only have ONE option, to avoid the deer. The SUV won't, the 1Series and the Mini will! Small cars just make so much sense. I have my nimble & agile 135, she has her unbelievably safe Mini, and we both feel infinitely more intelligent for doing so!!

The same thing happened to my friend when he picked up his '08 GTI. His fiance decided that it was her car. Personally, I'm fine with sharing, but I would be peeved if my girlfriend/fiance/wife claimed a car that I'm paying for as 100% her own. Damn logic, always getting me into trouble...

Let my gf drive my car yesterday She loves the power in the car and isnt scared to push the car a little which i really dont mind. We get to a circle and she stalled 3 times!!! I felt sick then she pulls off and misses 2nd! thank god it was only a short drive back home. We both agreed that she'll stick to her car!
Its really weird. She has no problem driving her little mazda 2 but she cant drive the 1 for sh*t. she says she cant feel the clutch? hmm.. women.. :P

They just started doing the ED discount for M3s. Get one of those if she's keeping the 135i, or just use that to threaten her. You can get great deals on M3s now, check out the M3Post forums to see what prices people are getting now...

i had a choice between automatic w/ sport package or a stick with premium pkg and a few other goodies, my rep said if you buy the automatic you'll never see your car in the summer time. So purchased the Stick....My wife drives a standard only when she has to, So I was assuming I may lose my car here and there over the summertime but she just informed me that she'll never drive my car because it's a stick.... my point you should have gotten stick, i may miss the sport seats but I surely would have missed my car more.

In April, it'll be a year I've had my 1 and the closest the misses has gotten to driving it was holding the wheel for a sec while I put a drink down...
no offense... I remember years ago I had a C230K and while living in MO, during the winter she drove the car and the ESP kicked in called me crying on the side of the road that the car won't let her drive... never driven a car of mine since... |
