I don't have the lightest foot but I haven't thrashed it either. I know that the stated consumption is almost always unachievable in the real world but I would like to think I at least had a chance of getting close. Instead my actual consumption is 48% higher than the 'official' rate.
Maybe it's got something to do with the......AUTOBAHN!

hehe. true.

Although I've only filled it up 3 times and the autobahn 'excursion' was on the third tank which was the lowest consumption. Maybe I should keep monitoring it for a few thousand more kms and see if it improves.

I'm off on a big trip round France, Switzerland and Germany in a week so will be interesting to see what the fuel economy looks like after lots of freeway driving.

Jesus man, you are seriously starting to make me jealous!! My memories of Switzerland include winding roads and spectacular scenery - though as a driver I guess you don't get to appreciate the scenery!

Just don't write and tell us you flogged it around the Nurburgring!

Have a safe trip and post pics when you get back!!

I've not been to Switzerland before so am looking forward to it too. My friend from Melbourne is coming to stay, hence the roadtrip.

Nurburgring is on my list although I'm very tempted to rent a car for that. http://rentracecar.de/ offer the 135i and, whilst it is quite expensive, I think it works out quite good value when you take into account tyres, brakes, wear & tear, potential write-off ...

I can't read German (other than AUSFAHRT - which I picked up on a Contiki tour through Germany) - what does it say the cost is to hire a 135i and for how long?

Ausfahrt... bwahaha. cracks me up everytime.

moving on... €570 for a half day, €849 for a full day. All inclusive insurance etc.

Maybe you should try the English version: http://www.rent-racecar.de/gb/index.html

Thanks for the info and the English site. In between posts I pasted into Babelfish and got an interesting translation - not unlike the instructions that come with the $99 DVD Chinese-made DVD players you buy from KMart!

Back on track....so they don't care if you fang it around the north loop all day??!!! Bloody awesome - I'm in for sure!

I know. It's brilliant. When I think that 4 tyres for my car is over a grand it really makes sense. And I'd be out €44k if I crashed my car.

I remember taking my old Subaru Legacy RS to a track day with fairly fresh tyres and getting home to find the canvas showing in places. That was an expensive day.

€849 is like A$1500....bargain! Might have to package it with a trip to Italy so the wife can stock up on clothes etc .

I'm just going to go off and sulk at the paltry 110kmh I'm allowed to do before my car gets impounded .

If you handbrake every hairpin on the Stelvio it'll shut them up.

Did a proper test today. Car said average for tank was 17.2. Real calculation based on click to click at pump was 15.7. I think it consumed about 15% more than my 120i, under similar driving. So if improves I'll be pretty happy if it matches the 120i.

I do click to click and reset the journey computer each time. I find there's only a difference of 0.1 to 0.3L/100km between the two measurements. The formula I use for manual calc is 100/distance travelled since last fill x litres click to click.

After 5000km I'm getting 10.5L/100km, which is the same as my ex-130i, more than my ex-530i and much less than my current X5!

I don't reset the other computer average as that gives a long term consumption - that's sitting at 10.6L/100km - off the top of my head that's based on the last 10 or 12 fills.

I've found that my actual mileage as calculated the scientific way is about 0.4 litres higher than the computer is reporting. Disappointing.

I was having a slight anorak moment when I filled it up on Friday so I've decided to see how many kms I can possibly get out of a tank of diesel. So I'm driving it using all my powers of economy for a whole tank and I'll report back what is actually possible from this car. So far it's looking good. When I filled it up it read 699km to empty. I've now driven it 60 kms and it reads 713 kms to empty .

Results should be interesting and I'll keep you all posted... If this tank doesn't get close to the 'official' consumption I'll be annoyed.

In fact, to accompany my anorak moment I am having a geeky moment and discovering the joys of Google documents.

You may all view my fuel consumption spreadsheet here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?k...HNDcvCBw&hl=en

Let me know if you have any problems viewing it.

Had a look at your spreadsheet....you clock up a fair number of kms! Approx 600km every 2 to 3 days! I didn't think Belgium was big enough.......

New car

And I've been on a couple of trips round Germany.

Based on my fuel consumption on the current tank it could be a while before I can update the spreadsheet again! I've done 70kms and the needle has barely moved. Of course they weren't the most exciting kms...

You really have to concentrate to drive super-efficiently. Always looking far ahead to try and avoid slowing down (difficult in traffic) and anticipating traffic light changes. If you see a light go red 200 metres ahead immediately start slowing using engine braking (zero fuel use) rather than driving to the stop light and then using the foot brake.

Also, driving at the speed limit instead of my usual 20 or 30km over saves heaps of fuel! At 120kph which is the motorway limit here I am doing 2000rpm and using around 6.5 litres but it can vary wildly depending on inclines or if you have to slow then speed up again.

Hopefully the results make it worthwhile! Based on the current projection I should achieve about 5.8 litres / 100km on this tank. (If I don't get bored and start thrashing it again...)

I believe they call it "Hyper-miling" and I've seen websites devoted to the activity. I've tried it but got bored after a few kilometres!

I believe these cars are built to be thrashed - or else why would they mark the speedo up to 280km?

You're right. It is called hyper-miling. And I will probably get bored too. I'll see if I can do it for one tank, then work out how much money I saved, discover that it was only €5, and happily thrash it for the rest of it's life.
