Most likely considering the 128i but I will configure both models and see the price difference when pricing is offically available.

I'm going to have to go with a 135i. If the price is ridiculously expensive, then I will go the Cooper S route. No 128 for me sir.

I also plan to do Euro delivery on this car. What are the best weather months to lap the Ring, so I can plan for a good delivery time?
Out of curiosity, why do you consider a 128i and upgrade to a Cooper S? Is it the luxurious side?

It's not BMW corporate that does that.
BMW Canada & BMW NA, make those decisions for their own markets.

I'm leaning towards the 128 with the Sport package. I don't like the tacked-on "extra" spoiler on the back of the 135, want lighter weight, and as the 128 is going to be slightly sub-6 second anyway that is plenty fast enough for me. I already find myself getting too fast too quickly in my current car with its 8 second 0-60.

Jay Leno once wrote about the frustration and eventual boredom inherent in driving cars with hyper levels of performance on public roads (and he should know); you can never get them anywhere close to their limits before you are in license-losing territory, so you either completely miss the enjoyment of exploiting their potential or you drive in paranoid/dangerous mode. Of course if you can track the car regularly or have somewhere nearby where you can safely drive at 9/10ths, great, but if you live in a large urban area like I do that's pretty unlikely...
I'm with you on this!!!
Give me a manual 128i with the good mechanical bits (brakes & suspension);
& Keep the weight to a minimum, (no sunroof, loose some of the power goodies)

It could really be the true drivers car for everyday use.

Your reasons are why I will not likely buy another M.
I love my car to death; but on a regular basis,
you just can't use what the car is capable of giving.

Im definently interested in the 128i...sounds like more ppl are into the 135i. This means they might make a better deal on a 128i! Look at the 3 series coupes, don't see a lot of 328i coupes. Plus the insurance

I think the 128i will be an excellent buy. I expect after a year (spring 2009) the petrol lineup to consist of a 125i, 130i and the M. The 125i with ~215hp and the 130i with ~260hp. (M ~350hp) The 128i will be a sought after car. I expect the 130i to be a few thousand $$ more than the 128i, but ‘only’ ~30 hp more. Anyone who gets the ‘base’ 128i, won’t have the ‘base’ for long. The 125i will become the base (Turbo 4).

interesting scenario. i would never expect that a model would paradoxically become a better value when the opposite is what usually occurs(e.g. the 330 becoming the 335 etc.) the line-up that you predict is what i would've expected in the first place but i guess the engines weren't ready. under your scenario i think that the 135 would have it's value enhanced as well as it will be much less expensive than the m1 which it would rival in performance.

I agree. My thoughts: why wait... one could wait forever. Get the car (128 or 135) and enjoy (But I am going to wait for the 123d :wink

Garage List
2008 128i  [0.00]
There seem to be two groupes of buyers: those who want the performance of the 135 and first time BMW buyers who want a reasonably priced, well-built yet exciting entry level BMW. I will count myself among the latter unless the 128 looks significantly worse and the price for the 135 is reasonable.

Probably the 6 Cylinders, the coupe configuration, RWD, bigger inside and out, more power and torque, no supercharger whine, better interior, and better looking. Probably could think of a few more, but....

it's my impression that the cooper is simply positioned in the line-up below the 1er just as the 1er is below the 3er etc. it's a less substantial vehicle.

the 128i will have one of the best inline 6's in it in the world and weighing less than the 3 series. It will be one of the best cars in the world for under 30k.

+2, while the 135i is getting all the love I think the 128i is going to be a very potent machine and a good value (imagine that, a BMW that is a good value).

I might. My wife is slowly shopping for a new car, and the 3-series is currently at the top of her list. We drove a 335i and 328i last week and to tell you the truth, I wasn't bowled over by the TT inline 6. It sounded gruff and tractor like compared to the sweet song of the NA 6, and to be honest it wasn't all that exciting in terms of power delivery. Just smooth, linear pull. Nice, for sure, but not all that exciting.

I liked the 3's, but I'm hot on the 1er. Saw a bunch of them in Germany a few months back, and I've been chomping at the bit ever since. The new Coupe looks great, IMO. So 128 or 135? Dunno, I'll drive both... And I admit, opinions can certainly change. Perhaps I simply enjoyed NA power after a few years in a turbo car. Perhaps the ultimate speed of it all will lure me into the 135. But honestly, the 328 was actually more fun to wring out on the public roads we drove, so I'm thinking 128...
