As has been suggested, the current twin exhaust pipe is just a cosmetic thing. It would mean cutting pipes off the muffler and welding a new one on or something but if you really think it would look better it could be done.

Even if "dat second one is ...on dere for show," is it really worth the expense to alter it? To what end? I guess if you have money to throw away, and you want your 1er to look weird (the exhaust cut-out on the bumper is sized for the twin pipes), then go for it.

It's not expensive to install an exhaust ....lol you can pick up a decent exhaust and have it installed for 150-300 usually no garage is going to be charging you thousands for pulling off and then adjusting and placing a new exhaust you could even do it yourself of you have some idea how to weld

Please tell me your at least talking about a real muffler and a real tip and not a fart can. What style tip were you considering? round, oval, square, bowtie, angled, angle cut, dtm etc.

If you guys rbtalking about the muffler then its easy to find a jdm one and have it fit.
The cutout in the 128i exhaust would look goofy if the muffler lacks a certain fatness around the muffler tip. If its beefy it would look cool, that's if u like jdm

If u want single from exhaust manifold, that's custom work. Or a used riss racing exhaust made to fit 128i. Still custom, but less effort

single exhaust from exhaust manifold of the engine or just the muffler area/axel back?

There is room for more TQ in low end and a few hp, the system I have does that. It goes from manifold to end, so its proven.

Muffler only, not sure. Stock mufflers are quite restrictive, BMP and Magnaflow are probably less restricitve.

EDIT
if you google "128i race car" you will see what the single exhaust would look like
