But they do have electronic LSDs, which BMW will assure you are nearly as good!

You know, the e diff gets a lot of hate, but it does do its intended job fairly well as far as keeping you in line. Have you noticed how it's nearly impossible to spin out uncontrollably when youre trying to drift/do donuts? I think it's a very good traction control system and people wouldn't have a problem with it if BMW hadn't marketed as being something it isn't

There's a lot of sarcasm on car forums, don't take it personally.

I just love it how it only takes the next new guy for people to forget what it was like to be the new guy. Is it really that hard to answer a question with out being an asshole?

Here is a pretty good thread about the workings of the E-Diff BMW uses on the 1 Series (sans 1M) --> http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=719012

As noted the 135i comes with an electronic differential and an LSD is not a factory option. You can get an aftermarket LSD for $2500 and from what I've read here guys seem pretty happy with the upgrade. The 1M differential is not a direct swap.

You could also put in the diff and subframe from a loaner E9x M3 or is it not that easy?

I was an e-diff disbeliever but recently, with the snow we had in the northeast, I starting to think it actually works. My driveway is steep and winding and with the recent snow then melt then freeze, I had a mix of snow and ice to negotiate. I've got full snow tires on my car so that helps but I was able to get up the driveway no problem. I could hear some wheel spin that would change from left side to right side but the car just kept moving forward and I didn't smoke a tire.

I'd say that's real world proof. That being said, I am doing a full M3 subframe/diff swap this spring but only because I will be tracking the car.

I think you need to build a custom driveshaft and/or half shafts

That's annoying. Imagine a world where BMW wouldn't punish us with half a car for not ponying up for an M

The e diff definitely does it's intended job well

I hate it. HATE IT. With a fiery passion. It's good for track work, no doubt will get you through a corner. However if you want to do a burnout or have any true sideways fun, it's absolutely awful. Best case is it locks up about 70% of the time and you end up cooking your rear brakes in 20 mins.

I will be swapping it for a proper LSD the second I get the opportunity.

How would a LSD affect the different selectable settings - all nannies, traction, DSC off? My car had the OE diff swapped for a Wave Trac. I'm not sure what to expect, or how the function should be, with the different settings. I suspect there must be a difference, otherwise why bother?

You don't like unpredictable, snappy drifts with a 1 tire fire and the other wheel hopping along?

It's very difficult to disable all of the TC and e-diff modules so you basically end up with a proper LSD and minor brake inputs to keep it stable, which is fine by me.

Stock is essentially as desertman123 described below...

Yeah, I can always smell them brakes after some donnies. One-wheel slides at wet intersections don't really look that much sexy. It helps with U-turns on dry pavement, though, in comparison to a BMW with no open diff trickery. Too bad I don't have it on Video cuz I was mad proud of myself that day!

Next car is hopefully gonna have an LSD. I ain't gonna modify the 1er.
