Yes it is covered & I am not held at fault so USAA wont raise my rates

Now the hunt begins for a good body shop. There is also a small ding on the hood and a scratch from the branches. Maybe, I can have some of those nasty chips repaired on the hood as well.

No storms but heavy rain and some mild wind just blew this piece off the tree. Had I parked further back it would have dropped harmlessly onto the wind shield.

Oh well

Dude...I'm so bummed to see that, especially for someone like you that is so in love with their "lady in the red dress"

If they have to replace the top skin...see how much carbon fiber would cost you...you'd be the only 128 in the world with CF

I want someone who is as obsessive and passionate about what they work on as I am driving.

So
1. Someone close to home recommended by Hahn Autogroup (Porsche Zentrum) or Menton BMW

2. http://www.schropp-fahrzeugtechnik.de/usa_index.html

3. Any other Stuttgart Suggestions?

Damn that really sucks. I wish I had recommendations for you but thankfully I've not needed to look into them. I'd get the nicks and chips fixed also, why not.

I feel you pain buddy. We all do. Really sucks.

I visited Hahn Autogroup. I think they are in Fellbach where MB has its Classic Car Center (oldtimers) and all their secret storage warehouses located. Hahn was the very last VW/Audi AND Porsche Zentrum in Germany. Dr Hahn is(or was) on the Audi board too. He is well connected. I was there about ten years ago... I was so blown away by the cars they had on the lot. AND then I saw these two RED 959's. One was a regular 959 and one was an 959-S (more Hp!!). Seems that Dr. Hahn lifted off the gas in a turn and stuff it in the armco ass backwards!! What a sight that was in their body shop. I think Porsche made them give up the franchise bc Porsche SE owns all the dealers in the Stuttgart area. Porsche wanted to own all the dealers outright in Stuttgart. I think only the one at the airport is independent now. The other three are Porsche SE owned(I think).

I think this is the place I went too... Its now a VW Zentrum... Ringstr. 12-18, 70736 Fellbach

Here in Bamberg there is a GREAT small body shop called A&N Scholtz. Its owned by these two brothers and the shop is super clean and modern. You need to find a shop that can mix and spray the BMW ceramic paints. Its a little bit different then what say VW or Audi use. I really like these guys. Plus they will give you a five year guaranty(in writting!) on their paint repairs - a sure sign of a good shop. I would contact them Bob and see IF they know of a shop down by you. IF not... they offer free loaner cars. I would highly recommend them.

Dack,
Thanks for the tip on the ceramic paint mixing, I'll ask that as a follow up question.

I will say this about Hahn. I think it is the same outfit, as they do not have a dealership in Stuttgart proper. They recently took over Porsche Zentrum Flughafen.

They are trying to get me out on the track at one of their driving schools. Especially, when I showed up in the 1er with the BMW Car Club badge. But, alas the will only accept me in Big Sally. They hit up Spa in October but, I will be in some exotic locale (Monte Carlo ) at that time.

In Reutlingen they always have several race cars in for maintenance. There is also a HUGE american style trailer rig that can haul 4 or 6 cars (two floors) for special events. It's a pretty serious outfit. The president of the Deutsche Porsche Club is a regular in Reutlingen too, I am told he also owns a Cayenne.

Hahn recommended me to a tiny tiny tiny one man operation here in Pliezhausen. The owner, Lars states he does not use any spackle or filler and that he thinks he can save the roof. The painting, I assume is done by Lars at a second location in Tubingen. His shop is tucked behind a stein and dach bau. It has a generally disheveled appearance of the likes from someone who is too busy to keep after day to day cleaning. No painting or prep here, only metal manipulation. A closer inspection revealed an interesting assortment of collectable old timers. 2 original Mini Coopers, a Mini Moke (1967), a Porsche under cover, a rear subframe on stands, and about 3 dozen sets plain radial tires scattered but stacked and marked VR, HR ect ect around the small tree lined park platz. To Lar's credit he was carefully pinging a dent out of a rear quarter panel on an A6 wagon. He carefully tapped from the inside while feeling the outside with his bare hands. Every so often he would lean back, poke his head out, adjust the light, and examine his work all while feeling the dent with his bare hands. All of this was done while maintaining a position a Yoga master would be proud of.

A second quote is comming from Brinx in Echterdingen. They are the main goto shop for USAA. If I have my work done there I get a warranty that will carry back to the United States. Which, I dont think I can get here in Pliezhausen. Brinx is a larger operation with several American style minivans in for repair. Clearly EUCOM, AFRICOM, and 10th group keep these guys in business. There were several old timers there in various stages of restoration but, their bread and butter is the family truckster. For cleanliness I would have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10. There was a big construction/remodeling effort going on in the parking lot, the door leading to the parking lot was wide open in the sanding and prep areas. The floors looked as though they had not been cleaned in a few days. As a point of reference the last body shop I used looked like this
http://berlisbody.com/gallery_011.html

So right now, I think I am still looking. I need to check out the spray booth in Tubigen.

Sorry for such a long winded post.

Update

5,300 dollars in damage, 7 days of work

I am not going with a Carbon Fiber roof. OEM parts only to keep warranty valid....nice idea though.

At least I'll be TDY for during the repair & I'll have a chance to spend a several days behind the wheel of my E30!

I am filing a cliam for my deductable and diminished value. Case law is well documented and under Texas Law I am entitled to this. But, the loss did not occur in Texas & I am having trouble finding any guidance on how to proceed.

I need to know how much to claim and back it up with policy/case law.

I know the NADA value of the car prior to the loss but, value post loss is where I have trouble. Appraisals in Germany?

Sounds like I will be stopping by Judge Advocate General when I return.

Should I decide to trade it in when we PCS back it will no longer be elibible for the CPO program.

In TX. Diminished Value is only owed to a claimant (or a first party insured when the claimant is at fault and the claimant has no insurance) when there is negligence involved on the other party.

http://www.tdi.texas.gov/bulletins/2000/b-0027-0.html

In this situation, with the damage caused by a storm, had it ocurred in TX. DV would not apply.

I do not know if DV could be claimed in Germany.. you would have to check local statutes/laws.
My expectation is that this loss would not be a case for DV due to the lack of a responsible party causing the damage since it was due to an act of God/nature.

Sorry to hear of the damage to your vehicle and hope that the repairs go smoothly.

Not to be the stirrer of the pot and point fingers, but you could have USAA or yourself file a claim with DPW for the "blame" since they are responsible for the grounds and ensuring the trees are within spec. Sure weather caused the branch falling, but a good lawyer could say it wouldn't have broken if they had trimmed it. Just a thought.

picked up car from Brixner last Saturday. Been out in the rain so no good chance to wash it.

Thumbs up and a Hell Yeah for Brixner

All evidence of tree damage is gone.

I can't tell the difference, they repaired the rock damage and a couple of minor dings on the passenger side door, and ran my bluetooth coding hack wire pro bono!

had I been on my game I would have asked them to hard wire a drop for my escort 9500i
