Spare tire?

Anybody here keep a spare tire/donut in their trunk, especially for long distant travel? Does it make sense to have one?

Have one in my trunk. If I'm lucky I'll never use it, but if I'm unlucky I won't be waiting around for a tow or figuring out how to get home.

my 135i has 18" wheels. does the spare tire compatible? i'm sure
the hole patern fit, but i was thinking that the spare tire might be
smaller radially and driving lopsided might not be good.

All 1-series use the same outside diameter tyres, whether the OEM wheel is 16", 17", 18" or 19". Only the tyre width and profile changes, the diameter stays the same.

You need a 17inch wheel to fit over the front brakes. I have the euro 335i alloy donut in my 135i...

spare tire/wheel/notrad 36110445045 euros 120
jack/wagenheber kit 7110677536 euros 100

From what I understand BMW in the states can not order euro parts anymore. IF you really want a spare tire kit I would loo into the e60 tire/jack kit for $300.

This wheel is not DOT certified, and could never have been ordered through a dealer. I have this wheel, brought back by a returning GI, it is an awesome wheel.

I thought it was the tire that was not DOT certified, not the wheel. ?

The e60 steel wheel is only one inch wider (4.5" vs 3.5") - I believe. I rather like my light alloy donut too.

I have. First I had a mini donut. Then the time came when I needed to use it... the car was very unstable at speeds. So, I bought a full size tire and mounted it on a 17" steel wheel. Best thing you can do is throw one of your winter wheels in the trunk or buy an extra wheel/tire combo. Having a flat when your far, far away from home is not a good thing! Having a full size spare is the BEST feeling you can have, esp when you have a flat tire!!

Yup. I swapped out the OEM RFT for Michelin PSS. Then I bought a spare tire/donut kit from Bavauto and it's now in the trunk.

I got a rear flat and need a spare asap... Is there something available at like Costco or something that'd fit our cars?
