Surge in Power at 2500 RPM
When accelerating, as soon as the car hits roughly 2500rpm, I get a surge in acceleration. The engine takes on a higher pitch and revs build faster. Kind of like the old VTEC Honda engines. Is this normal?

It sounds good to me! I drive a 135i, and have never really wrung out a 128i or 328i.

I don't have any experience with Hondas, but yeah, power delivery is very linear on these cars and really seems to increase exponentially as the revs climb. I don't know if I've noticed a particular point in the RPM range where it feels like the power "turns on," but around 2500-3000 the engine is definitely waking up. As you start to hit 4000, 5000, 6000 it is just screaming and pulling hard, I love it.

You realize this is the definition of something being NONlinear right?

I guess I wasn't describing it correctly. I just meant that it builds quickly, once it gets going. And that it doesn't drop off at the end.

What you are experiencing is Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing, which is basically a variant of VTEC/MIVEC/VVT-iE/etc. It's the reason for what you are describing.

do you have an auto? my pedal feels dead until I push it in, also reason why I always drive in manual mode, car feels much more alive. The auto's have bad lag, which can be fixed with a BMS powerbox and such.
and, as others said above, the double vanos and also the 128i gets full torque around there.

I thought what you were feeling was turbo-lag before I realized you have a 128. BMW's have a stronger power band higher up in the revs. German cars are like that for some reason, I have the same feeling in my old Benz. Japanese cars normally feel like they have consistent power throughout the revs and it doesn't dramatically increase (not considering v-tec or vvt-i etc. etc.)
