Replacing battery
Starting having problem with the battery which shows "increased discharge" and clock and date has been reset. I checked the battery voltages when the car was off and was only 10V.
Did some research and people mentioned that I will need to register the new battery at dealership. Anyone has replaced their battery yet? Did you just buy a new one from supercheapauto and replace the old one like on other cars? Or you still need to take it to dealer and do the registration? Also someone suggested that I should get BMW advanced charging system to fully charge up the battery? Can I just buy third party one from supercheapauto?

As long as you don't get a 'worse' battery it will be fine, not aure what the go is with apparently having to go to the dealership, it's a battery ffs. - even the battery shop guys that hve done newer bmw's before just kinda laugh at it.

That's because the battery shop guys have no clue about the electronics in our cars. Yes ... You need to go to the dealer or code your car to tell it has got a new battery to get the most out of it. You can just change it over but it might not last as long as it should. There are a lot of threads on this in the forum. There are a couple of different battery technologies around and each need to charge and discharge in accordance to their technologies.

I am sure that I saw a thread on the global site where batteries were known to have exploded when not coded. Something to do with the charging circuit. Sure you could find it if interested.

How about the charging system? Can I just buy one from auto shop or I need to use BMW one?

Search battery registration. I am sure Dack will post the link once we get to his time zone.

Any thoughts on battery chargers? I know Dack mentioned Ctek, but there are like 20 of them...

I'm looking at one of these.
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Calibre-Battery-Charger-12V-4-Amp-3-Stage-Intelligent-Pulse.aspx?pid=276835&menuFrom=70603#Description Will they work ok? I know that if the battery is dying, I need to g a new one anyway, but I just need to buy some time for searching what type of battery I should get and how can I register it.

As your in Perth, If you find a guide on how to do it, I have the cable (borrowing RaihaX's) and the software (INPA) to code it if you want.

Stupidest system if so
Why doesnt it just read the voltage/amperage outpu and charge accordingly? That's what all the battery systems i install/work with do - though i do remember now entering in how many AH the batteries have.. But i mean.. Heck, i can go put in a battery in just about any 10-20 year old car and expect it to last for it's normal lifetime. Why does bmw have to be a pain in the assl in this aspect as such a high end I'm going to spend $400-$500 on a battery and have to spend $100 more to get it 'working'? Ugh Ed: and why would the car charge the battery more *automatically* if it's older? At least in part that it could well be over-charging a perfectly fine battery and causing it damage. Ed: scrap that, just remembered installing batteries and rectifiers in office 2 mths ago.. We're talking $700 odd per battery and they'll last 10 years with no special care other than automated 'oh it's below 12v float? Well lets just fix that by charging it!' .. That's all that any charging system does that i've ever dealt with - sees that it's a 12v battery below 12v and puts it back up to 12v.. If it's 12+v, just chill out a bit.. I've found heaps of google results saying why to register and code but my training specifically on dc power systems says 'huh???' lol :/ Ed: i keep forgetting that we are talking about a company that happens to suggest oil intervals of 30000+ and 'lifetime' tranny fluid I can believe bmw would implement this and i'm better off getting it done, i just can't work out WHY |

You can get any battery with the same spec, and I can borrow my BT cable to register it. (Provided it is the same spec battery - otherwise I don't think the BT cable can do coding).

BTW, I found something at Repco, not too sure whether it is a good alternative as Ctek brand, what do you think? (They stock Ctek 3600 as well priced at $136).

Although the more expensive chargers have more features (discharging, trickle etc). A charger for just charging a standard lead acid battery anything will do. Some charge at more amps than others so they do it quicker etc.

hmm, true. I didn't even click. Ignore everything I said.
We have a few old telstra deep cycle and sealed batteries and charge them with both a ctek and cheap kmart charger and haven't had any issues. touch wood. However, if its reading 10v which is pretty low, personally I'd just buy a new one. It's 4 years old now so it could be on its way out and may cause you less hassles in the future just replacing it now.
