is it too warm for winter tires yet?

It has been unseasonably warm here in Chicago, sometimes hitting >60, and I've been trying to figure out when to put my wheels/tires on for the winter. I purchased the following tires:
205/50R-17 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 Green X XL

I'm worried operating them when it is too warm and wearing them out faster. Is this a valid convern or should I just throw them on at this point?

I'd err on the side of caution & mount them soon. As far as tire wear, you will be saving your summer rubber - so it should all balance out.

I put mine on a week or so ago.... it has been warm, but soon the warmth will disappear instantaneously. I figured I'd put them on when I had time, because as soon as i "need" them I won't have a chance to get them mounted.

I'm just north of you in Madison, WI and I have yet to put on the winters. I just hate driving on winter tires when the temp is 45+ degrees because a) the tires progressively handle worse the warmer it is and b) the higher the temp, the faster they will wear IIRC. The stock summers are still very capable in 45ish degree weather once they warm up and (puts on flame suit) IMO they are even capable of getting you home if you unfortunately find yourself in light snow/slush granted you drive very carefully (if you were to find yourself in a unexpected snow). So for the most part, I probably not going to put on my winter wheels/tires until it is consistently below freezing overnight.

I'm waiting until there's snow in the forecast. Changing out the tires takes an hour at any tire shop so until then I'm running my OEM's.

IIRC the Mich X-ice has a 80,000 tread warranty. Assuming you swap at half a year, and drive 20,000 per year, (100,000 total, 50,000 on X-ice). You will need to throw away the X-ice at 30,000 before the warranty is met.

This assumes you understand that tires over 5 years old are unfit for performance driving.

Note: I'm running X-ice 12 mo. on a 4wd Honda. The 1'er tires are rated "oh shit" when it comes to snow.

YMMV

It's still in the high 40's to low 50's in CT but I decided yesterday since I had time to switch. I'm sure within next few weeks temps will be dipping. I remember one winter the temp hit 70 degrees for a day and i had winters on. On a side note I woke up to a flat this morning. Wondering if I punctured it last winter. Thank God for the BMW Mobility Kit I bought!

You might want them worn in a bit before the bad weather hits too to get rid of a bit of the greasy new tire feel.
