Illuminated ///M shifter knob question

Just talked with my SA and he mention that it may be possible to install the Illuminated ///M shifter knob. They would have to remove the console and I’m looking at about an hours labor.

I really don’t want to attempt to do this myself and am also a little worried about having the dealer do it.

I could just get the regular ///M shifter but the Illuminated one would be the balls!

The shifter is $119 + $105 for an hours labor.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If you want it, get it! I'm sure install will be easy, but again, if your not comfortable installing yourself, bring it to the dealer, I would trust them, I just dont want pay $105.00 more to have them install a shiftknob.

The console is a cinch to pull out and to pop back in. The wiring for the illumination is probably what the labor is for. There is a small harness under your ashtray but I'm not sure how the shifter ties into it, or if it is connected somewhere else. If you're at all handy you can DIY for sure.

The ///M cars have a special plug for the shifter and it just plugs in. The non- M cars probably do not have that so you would have to splice into a light source. That's the tricky part. I know there's a DIY for the E36 cars that splices into the ashtray light but I don't think this car has that light.

There is indeed an ashtray light (don't know if it's the same as e36 tho). There is a small plug under the left side of the ashtray assembly. Wires come from the plug to a little LED orange light that puts out ambient light into the ashtray itself (through a small window). The ring around the lighter port is also lit up.

As said, they would have to splice some wires to get it to work

Also remember , unlike the E90 //M knob, the illuminated knob isnt short

Install is easy, hours labor fuckin bullshit it takes exactly 4 minutes and 7 seconds... its a dealer trying to get over on you.

1. Remove the old shift knob by pulling up
2. Remove the boot
3. Pull upwards on console to remove (its held in by metal clips)
4. Locate the wires going to the little light by the cig outlet.
5. Tap into those wires
6. Install everything you just removed. No big deal.
Shit give me a 100$ ill do it ahhaha

I know it's not short but I'd be ok with the same length I have now. I just want something that has a better feel and looks nicer. I can't understand how BMW overlooked this.

Here are some day time pics of the lighted M knob. I'll try and find some night pictures.
