2012 135i Failing HPFP replaced under 8 year 80k warranty
I'm just throwing this out there because this just happened to me and I want people out of warranty to know their options.
The gist is, I took my car in yesterday for stalling/idling/backfiring issues to the local dealership, was quoted the diagnostic fee etc. I'm at 31k miles, no aftermarket warranty, vehicle was sold to original owner in 2011 so 4 year warranty is gone. Needless to say I was expecting a rough repair bill. Was pleasantly surprised this morning when my SA called and said that they determined the high pressure fuel pump was failing and would be replaced under a special 8 year 80k mile warranty, all parts labor and diagnostics rolled in. I don't have any idea if this has been a longstanding thing, a recent thing in reaction to all the deserved hoopla about the hpfp's horrible track record. If this has become common knowledge or I missed another thread, delete this and my apologies. If it's lesser known information and you find yourself in an out of warranty situation where this can help you, awesome. |

It was most likely goodwill'd by the dealership as there isn't any extended warranty to the N55 HPFP (13-51-7-610-761), and this would not be a normal thing they would cover after the 4yr/50k is up. Glad to hear they replaced it though.

So after reading your post I asked specifically why I was covered when I picked up my car this morning. Apparently some n55s had their fuel pumps recalled and some were silently extended warranties. You're right, its not n55 wide as I initially understood, but apparently some of us are covered by this.

I brought the car back into the dealer Friday after having similar issues to why I brought it in and got the HPFP replaced. Got her back today, was told that my ER charge pipe had leak at the sleeve, they did a smoke test and tightened it and I'm good to go. I asked my SA over the phone if that was a part that had to come off when they did the HPFP and he said no, my recollection from the DIY HPFP replacement PDF was that was a yes. Either way I wasn't charged for it and I got a rental over the weekend, but I'm now super curious. Can the dealer replace the HPFP without pulling the charge pipe or did they just give me back my car in not perfect shape and try and pass the mistake off as my install error with my charge pipe?

The charge pipe, airbox and intake manifold typically have to be removed for just about anything on that side of the motor. If you have really, really tiny hands (myself included in that demographic) you can occasionally get away with not removing the intake manifold. Just about everything has to come off though.
Although this is really just my opinion on how dealerships operate, It's most likely an error caused by the technician. Your service advisor was probably unaware of it though. What I'm guessing what happened was the technician probably didn't connect the charge pipe correctly fixed it really quick and didn't charge any parts or labor.

Still stalling when coming to a stop when engine is cool. Slightly rough idle during this period as well. Seems like the dct transmission is doing the usual high gear to d1 drop and the car stalls unable to generate the low rpm torque. It starts compensating when slowing down by more aggressively downshifting. This appears to mitigate when the car is warm. I'm basically stalling put my first 3 stop signs per cold start.
Any ideas would be welcome, I don't have an ses light, and I know adaptations were reset at the dealer so I don't know what compensations might need to rebuild, or if that could even be part of this. |

For reference only, After my 3rd trip back to the dealer my HPFP was replaced a 3rd time under the part specific warranty due to lot number, and the dealership replaced my mass air and o2 sensors under goodwill. The car has felt almost 100%, and the almost might just be me not feeling quite as confident in it. But no stalling, no weird transmission behavior.

My 2011 135i DCT with N55 engine had HPFP failure in 56k mileage on 9/31/2016. I was on freeway driving ~70 mph and the car suddenly cut off power itself and the whole car shaking like I'm sitting roller coaster when I tired to press the gas pedal (All lights are turned on on the dash). I had to pulled over the shoulder and tried seeking help from AAA but luckily after 15 mins I was able to turn on the ignition again and the car ran normally with all the lights gone. I went BMW Irvine and they told me ~$1700 total for the replacement of HPFP and rail pressure sensor coz my CPO warranty just expired...My car has CPO on it but sadly expired on 9/16/2016. And there' were no recall for N55 HPFP in BMW North America so I have to pay off the repair from my wallet. I tried to reach BMW NA and the Service Manager in dealership and finally got the goodwill from them which cost me $0 for the repair. Hope my story can give you guys some references about dealing with HFFP on N55 engine.

Google federal emissions warranty. Its a government enforced mandatory warranty that all automobile manufacturers that sell cars in the USA must honor. It covers ECU, fuel injectors, fuel pump, and anything in the emissions system for your car for 8/80,000 miles.
