Quaiffe LSD Group Buy

How many people would be interested in doing this? I think that a Quaife LSD will transform the 1er more than any other mod I can think of and it would make the effect of other mods much more apparent as well. Its not cheap at all partly due to the process of getting it shipped here from the UK, swapping it out with the factory final drive and shipping that unit back.

Wayne has suggested that possibly we could hire someone who will bring it here for us and take back the factory unit, but absent that, just pooling the shipping may help defray the costs.

I thought we had welded diffs and would have to source the entire thing. :iono:

I know that Dan @ diffsonline has done a couple of 135i LSDs now, but I bet those are close to $4k, but you could get custom ramps/lockup and final drive.

Larry, yes it is welded hence the complication that Quaife will provide the entire new final drive and we send the factory one back to them.

Dang.. sorry Prof! Just noticing the locale. There's got to be a better option for you blokes than to send your diff halfway around the world.

Usually there's no better option. The joys of living in an isolated island in the back of nowhere with the most poisonous spiders and snakes in the world

Airfares and shipping are usually killers too....

Unless hitting the track or planning to drift the car around corners (highly silly), will you really benefit from a mechanical LSD?

Agree. Mechanical LSD def not for me... the car is more than capable for my use, even with the odd track day. I'd hate to think that this would void a driveline warranty which i'm almost 99% sure it would!

an lsd is not just for drifting but for a better application of power to the road while cornering or driving on unequal yet even traction surfaces.

to each his own but just in case anyone is genuinely interested in reading about it see the attached info sheet from bird's uk.

I had a quaife atb on my Z4 and have already been in touch with Kevin also. I think I will wait until I've put the car on the track, skid pan and motor khana before I decide if it is totally necessary for me.

oh so you are the one i heard about. i hope you don't mind keeping me in the loop about how it goes for you?

i drove a 335 for a few days with a quaife lsd in some interesting weather and fell in love with it. at this stage though all this is preemptive anyway since the VIN would be needed for an order and my car exists only on paper.

Jeff, got your car yet mate?

Would be interested to drive a LSD car vs a Non LSD car in the same situations to actually feel/see the difference..

I have to say that for my 3L Z4 (which didn't have anything like the power / torque of the 135i) the transformation was amazing. Having the quaife made me fall in love with the car all over again.

I would look forward to the wet days so I could do some 'power turns' on the way home

It made the car much more fun on the skid pan (I could actually get power-on oversteer rather than having to rely on weight transfer).

I dropped nearly a second at Wakefield and it turned the car into a motorkhana weapon.

The Z4 was an open diff with all aids off and the 135i has the e-diff function. I suspect this won't hold up to skid pan / motorkhana / heavy track work but I want to test first before committing the funds to another quaife.

The problem with the 135 is that it has the edl. It uses the brakes to simulate a real lsd. This complicates things, because we cannot be sure whether it will allow the real lsd to work properly. Unless there is a way to fully disengage the edl...

Strax, a forum member who is a BMW race car driver have had an LSD in his 135i for months now. He says it is no problem with the e-diff. Essentially e-diff would only come into play when the mechanical LSD losses traction.

Prateek, I can assure you that you can drift the 135i with the e-diff. Just don't ask how I know lol. I am doing a track day on 20th, and will let you know how the e-diff behaves before I make any sort of decision. One thing is definitely attractive though, and that is the extra acceleration from the new final drive!

I guess that's good news. Now the next question is whether the lsd is worth its value over the edl.

Does the 135 come with a sealed rear diff like late 335 models?

Yes all sealed unfortunately, which is why we will need to send the whole diff back to the manufacturer...

Hey does anyone know what diff they are running in the 130 racing in the local production class?
I am presuming this is a locked or LSD.

I stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure the diff has to be standard, along with things like brakes and gearbox. I had a good look at the two 335i entries at this year's Bathurst 12 hour and apart from some mandatory racing stuff (fuel tank, roll cage, cutoff switches, etc..) they were fairly standard. Admittedly they had a good part of the interior striped out.

Maybe, but I would be sure they will be some sort of locker or LSD.
Standard does not always mean standard

Well I've now bothered to look up the regs, and I do stand corrected.

"5.5 Differential and Final Drive Assembly:
The action of all final drive differential units, including those within AWD transfer cases, is free. The rear
cover plate of the final drive assembly may be replaced by another mechanically identical unit.
"

From CAMS Manual

You can always contact someone via the racing website if truly interested in finding out (http://www.pcaa.com.au/index.php).
