General ED Questions
1) Where is the plant for the 1? Is it in Welt? Munich?
2) Where are the drop off locations? I heard there are seven throughout Europe. 3) Was anyone fearful that they would damage their brand new baby on the unknown streets of Germany? Maybe I am the only paranoid one on here. If there is a general info site with all these answers, please feel free to direct me (minus the flames about searching the forum). Thanks in advance! |

1) The Welt is the delivery center in Munich near Olympic Park. The 1er factory is in Leipzeig (<-- not sure about the spelling). 2) Check out bmwusa.com and clink on experiences, then euro delivery, and poke around. Drop-off locations are all over Europe. I doubt you'll have any problem with this. 3) If paranoia is even a factor for you, you probably don't have many good reasons to pick up a BMW in Europe. German roads are built for great driving.

and wiki: http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index...opean_Delivery The risk of damaging your car during ED is similar to damaging it in the US. Well perhaps it's greater in certain Italian cities. On the other hand, you have insurance and any scratches/bumps/dings are automatically fixed when the car makes it back to the States, before you take re-delivery. Overall, if you like to travel (presumably you like driving given the choice of car), it has got to be the best possible way to buy a new BMW.

If you don't have nav make sure you figure out where you are going before you leave. If I didn't have nav i would still be wandering around europe trying to figure out what the signs mean.

I agree, nav is a must. If you don't have it installed you need to bring a portable unit. My wife and I were on a trip to Spain and Portugual last year and drove without nav. It cost us a lot of time and frustration, when we did ED earlier this year I bought nav to use while on ED and for some of the other functions you ca use once I brought it back home, I could care less about having nav here. It was worth the cost just for driving around over there.
You simply must do ED, I will not buy a car any other way.

ED is worth it just for the delivery experience at the Welt. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 270 ($200) and it was a life saver. It was preloaded with Euro. maps and worked well throughout western Europe. It is about the only way to find hotels, restaurants, ATM's, etc. The small towns have small narrow roads, a bit tough on the nerves. 1 last thing, parking is very difficult or expensive in a lot of places.

Thank you everyone for replying. Here is the thing, I have absolutely no problem with spirited driving and have no doubts that I can handle the car - it is the other guy I am worried about. Just don't feel like picking up my new baby only to be worried about getting it scratched or dinged on unknown streets. I have two people in Germany I can stay with, one in Stuttgart and another in Berlin (both live outside the cities in the suburbs). So I would basically have to pay for my airfare and some food, that's it. Sounds like I would be able to save money off my car AND get a free trip out of it. Sounds like a no brainer. No?
