Was it really necessary to put a dual mass flywheel on the E87?

I've always wanted to ask BMW guys this question: I once needed to have my flywheel replaced on my 2005 E87, I phoned the agents and was quoted some ridiculous amount of money (close to 20% of what I paid for the car). Upon doing some research I discovered a YouTube video, the comments mainly negative complaining that they took something cheap and simple and made it expensive and complicated. Wikipedia says its all in the name of "vibration reduction" but was it really necessary to put this complex (and problematic) device on what is basically an entry level BMW? There is little on the 1 series that screams luxury, buy a 5 series if you want reduced vibration comfort. What is your take?

Buu, that's pretty interesting.
Can you tell us what was it that diagnosed that the flywheel needing replacing?
I can only think that it was a manual E87 and the clutch had been slipping continuously.
Or it was involved in an accident.
