I would love to have one to replace the boring stock one on 135i. I can't believe BMW put that gauge cluster on 40K car ;(
woah and an M3 one on his 130i

wonder what the coding is? probably the voltage scaling for the speedo/tacho or something?

veryy interesting! :O

you just write the data on a new chip, that`s all!

Maybe I`ll go back to the m3 gauge, since it was just perfect!!

What are the steps to get the M3 gauge to fit in the 135i space? I understand there is trimming involved, but what exactly needs to be trimmed? I really want to do this mod.

Easy fit! I also have an M3 gauge cluster in my 135. But the 1M will fit without the modding, like what I had to do with the M3 cluster.

you have to trim the sides and the lower part till it fits.
If you do it please check very often if you did enough trimming!

How did you go about it? I have asked my dealer and they say it's not possible as the clusters are coded to the specific car, etc blah blah...basically saying it's not possible and they won't help me. I only asked about the 1M cluster, didn't even mention or think about the M3 cluster.

haha...

when you get a new cluster you have to get it coded to your car.
but it is NOT coded when your dealer orders it from bmw.
you just need to vin of your car for the coding.

ask your dealer about that...

when you get a used cluster, which is already coded to a specific car,
you have to install a new eprom chip and get it coded to your car.

trust me! I had a used m3 cluster in my 130i and a brand new 1m cluster installed in my current 135i.

you could even install a used cluster without coding it!
the mileage would be right, but the services will not show up right, not sure about the rpm range of the m3 cluster tho.
BUT it will show the service times of the car the cluster was in before.

They said they could not program the cluster to my car so it was futile for me to keep trying.

I know you had a new one installed which is how I knew it was possible and they were feeding me BS. I don't know whether they are simply ignorant or know enough to get themselves in trouble by telling me I would have to have it coded to my VIN and that they could not do it. They said they could not even order the cluster without a vin, so I would have to have a 'dummy' 1M VIN but they could not code it because my VIN would be different from the VIN they used to order it.

dunno what`s wrong with them!
I just ordered the cluster uncoded at my local dealer and they didn`t need my vin.

but you can order yours here and they will get it coded with your vin!

great guys!! bought a lot of stuff their!
but it`s expensive... I paid a lot less. but the coder which did my clusters is out of business.

He's right that it needs to be coded. If you buy a used 1M cluster, that's where the problem is. You'd need you VIN coded to it.
I had my cluster coded to work with the straight six and my VIN, since it's originally coded to work with the V8 M3.
Buy a brand new 1M cluster and it would plug in and work instantly.
I wanted the M3 cluster and went through all the BS to get it done and I love it in the car. Dan from BMW on these forums would give sell you one and explain the process to you.

I've seen a M3 speedo (in German called: Kombi) cluster installed in a 135i. It was in Thorsten's car from Car Coding.de when the guys from the 1erforum.de had a car coding event near me, in Nurnberg.

IF you look closely to the two top screws... this is where the M3 speedo/kombi doesn't quite sit flush. Its really no deal breaker IF you ask me.

Thorsten coded the digital M3 speedo (V = kph or mph) in my 135i's gauge cluster. The KPH or MPH can be changed on the fly thru the BC settings. I really like this "V = kph" feature. It reads TRUE vehicle speed and not the +5% buffered value the speedo reports. But your car coder can also code the buffered value in IF you so desire.

In every instrument panel there is a removable chip that holds the mileage data - so I am told. You simply transfer this chip to your new instrument cluster. Or... you code the new cluster to your car with its old mileage data. Either way works.

How would the 1 series M coupe cluster work with a 135i equipped with a DCT transmission? Once you install your old chip, would it show which gear your in, in the little digital display? Also, do any vendors sell a 1M cluster?

This is not right!!

Every gauge needs to be coded to work porperly, whether it`s used or brand new!

I think I am the only person that installed a used m3 gauge and a brand new 1m gauge. Both needed the coding.

Especially on the m3...
The rpm band won`t work, your next services will not appear and so on!

I had the brand new uncoded gauge installed while I was waiting for it to be coded! It did not work right!

Above I posted a link to ebay where a supplier sells a new gauge plus the coding.

I could tell you but I think you remember this thread!

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=781393

The gauge itself will work on a dct car, but it will not show up the gears in the display.

Wow! I was told that a brand new one would work...plug and play. That's why I said to speak to Dan.
But my M3 gauge cluster needed everything!

he is right that it will work in general, but not completely!

Yes the m3 gauge needs everything. but when you sell it, you can install it in every 135i uncoded for the new car and it will get the right mileage.
just the service times will not be right and be the old ones from the car it was coded.

I sold the m3 gauge from my 130i ans we installed it uncoded in a 130i and it worked but the service times.
