Cig Lighter/Outlet

Quick Q for you guys with the "new" console layout.. In my '08 vert I had a cig. lighter/outlet beneath the center console next to the ashtray where I could hook up my radar detector. Got my '11 coupe last week and this has been replaced by a little bin with no power outlet. My CA couldnt believe the only one available is underneath the arm rest next to the ipod hook up, as other models have one next to the glovebox. Is this what we are limited to now? I feel it is impractical and even dangerous to have to run the cable for my radar detector across the cabin from my windshield to the center arm rest. Did I miss something when looking?

Why not just get it hardwired? A good stereo shop could do it in a few minutes and it should only cost ~40 bucks. You can then steathily mount it between the headliner and rearview mirror so its less noticeable. As an added bonus you'll still have your outlet available for other uses.

Power Relocation Kit

But it does say it's to replace the one in the ashtray, not add a new one.

Im awaiting delivery of my '11 coupe, and Im not the least bit thrilled about the missing ashtray located power outlet. But I checked the DIY section for a Valentine 1 hardwire project, and theres an excellent write up there. Seems tapping the empty #5 or #8 slot with an 'add-a-circuit' device is pretty simple, and running the wire up behind the passenger side A pillar to an ultimate upper windshield mount is simple.. Check it out.

I use those extend a fuse on all my cars to wire in accessories. They work great with no splicing. You just need to know what side has the 12V or you may bypass the fuse and wire the accessory directly to 12V with no protection. Plus you can run the wire up the A pillar and in the headliner to conceal the wire for a tidy installation.
