High Failure Rate in New Steptronic Trans

First, My son's best friend brother works for the local BMW dealer here.

Last night, my son calls me up and says that the new 6 speed steptronics trannies are having a higher than normal failure rate.

I don't mean to complain...I just don't want to be a car makers guinea pig...

Think of this, then why do they have a repair kit already out for this trans...

BMW auto's, and everyone elses auto's have never been as dependable as an old fashioned manual tranny.

If I planned to keep a car for 100K miles or many years, I would think long and hard about ordering that automatic.

Garage List
Im not sure about the latest auto transmission, but all the BMW autos produced for the E46 and earlier were made by GM Europe. Interesting tidbit huh. But in their defense it was said that the one thing GM could build well was an automatic transmission.

GM's been building auto's for BMW for quite a while now,

the BMW shop I used to go to (when maintenance wasn't free) would tell me about how many tranny's go bad around 100k, the auto needs carefull service to keep it working correctly and now with never change oil we may see more failures down the road

According to the "2006 3-Series Specifications" released by BMW earlier this year, all Automatic E90s regardless of engine come equipped with the "ZF 6 HP 19, 6-Speed" transmission.

Is this deja vu all over again? The A/T on E46 for yrs 2003/2004 all had problems. BMW replaced many during these 2 yrs. GM France built those trannys.

first of all, your title says very specifically that the steptranic transmission has a high failure rate. Failure? you are saying they actually fail? at a high rate? please, this i getting ridiculous. i won't be back to this thread either.

How about before making dramatic assertions, you get your facts together, and document the situation clearly.

Is your "son's best friend (sic) brother" in a credible position of responsibility and authority to make this claim about failure rates? Does he have quantitative data to back it up? Or is this just rumor?

It concerns me that these alarmist posts are just causing unnecessary anguish. If there are facts behind them, then publish. If not, either keep quiet or, if you must publish, then qualify the credibility and authority of the rumor.
