I wait about 2 mins with the car running then keep to about 2k revs until the oil temp goes to about 100 degrees C. I read somewhere that is can cause hairline cracks in the engine housing if you boot a cold engine, not sure if there's any truth to it.

I usually wait about 10-30 seconds and let the oil get a chance to lubricate all moving parts then I drive the car and don't rev above 4000 rpm. If I live in north, I will wait for about 1 minute since the oil would be less liquid to flow.

In Germany its still illegal!
Especially in the winter months its very dangerous, because most of the people clean up their car from the snow when the engine is running. If the police catches you (or if a neighbor informs the police) you probably have to pay high penaltys.

I always drive the car the first 5 - 10 minutes not over 2000 rpm. After 10 minutes its normally no problem to go a little bit faster..

in any turbo charged car i think its always a good idea to let the car warm up and get below 1k start up idle....and always a good idea to let the car idle for 1 min or 2 before shutting off...thus the invention called a turbo timer..lol i know everyone has an opinion on them and ive always had them in turboed cars...to each his own...but i will say that im gonna install a turbo timer pretty quick as well as let the car fully warm up before driving...

Warm up the car....
Boy is that an old concept - old as in pre-fuel injection old. Unless you are dealing with some extreme conditions, it is toally unnecessary to warm up an engine (ie. letting it run for 30+ seconds simply for the sake of 'warming' the engine). On the other hand, don't try to launch the car straight from a cold start. Start it and drive normally.

Whilst I don't "warm it up", I tend to be a little gentle on the throttle for the first 3 or 4 minutes.

pretty sure that much like newer subarus and various other modern turbocharged vehicles, the turbos are watercooled and thus do not require turbo timers.

The 1er has a fan that can run even with the keys out, running the motor after driving is nothing but wasteful. Running an engine at startup is also wasteful, and doesn't do anything for warming the transmission/drivetrain, so you'd still need to take it easy for the first five or ten minutes.

My other car has an oil temp gauge and guidelines in the manual for what temp to obtain before certain rpm. It would be nice if the 1er had something similar.

i warm up the car, depending on weather conditions here, sometimes i let her warm up for around 5 minutes.

If im in a hurry, seconds to wear seat belt, turn on car, old shool hiphop on, gear engaged, drive under 2K till temp goes normal.

Oops, I'm an idiot, I always just assumed that was coolant temp, helps to actually look at the symbol. Well, that's nice!

yes most have coolant lines that circulate coolant throught them...do you know how hot oil and coolant get?> lol the idea behind turbo timers is that it lets the oil and or coolant cool down and not choking up the lines....as long as you drive the car slowly before you shut it off should be golden...its when you drive it hard then just turn the car off...my audi TT had an extra electric water pump that ran coolant through the turbo after shut off...still installed a turbo timer lol

i understand the function of a turbo timer, but i also realize that it isn't necessary or needed anymore.

seems like a ricer mod to me
