Check Engine Light Came On

My son took the car to Washington DC for the inauguration and a few days after he arrived i get a call from BMW assist saying there was an engine light on. After making arrangements to get the vehicle to the nearest service center, today they found that it was an exhaust filter that was bad. Now to be honest, i have never heard of such, I mean really an exhaust filter? I have heard of Air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, tranny filter, cabin air filter and even a catalytic converter which in itself is kind of like a filter but not really.

What the heck if the exhaust filter? CAn anyone enlighten me?

BTW he has pictures from the Oval Office. Can't wait to see them. And he is safe on his way home.

I think he may have meant the catalytic converter. It is a filter of the exhaust - in a way. There are oxygen sensors before and after the catalytic that are often the source of a check engine light.

If you have an android or apple phone you might want to look into an app called "torque". You need a bluetooth connection for the OBDII (about $25) and this $5 app and you can, among other things, read and clear check engine lights. A more typical use is to create virtual gauges. It will also graph data. Nice little app.

Well i got the car back along with the repair papers and it turned out to be the Vanos Solenoid that was replaced. That is a pretty good stretch from exhaust filter wouldnt you say? They also flushed the brake fluid, replaced the windshield wipers and checked the other levels.
