Alarm system installation?

Hey everybody...proud new owner of a Sedona Red 128i here. Dealership gave me a gift certificate to purchase items from the accessory catalog and one of the items I purchased was the alarm system. Since installation was not covered I asked them to give me a quote for installation....they came back with $352.00 for installation costs only. I'm sorry, but that sounds totally unreasonable to me, especially since the car is prewired...what do you guys think? Two other dealers quoted about $150.

Is there any way I can install this myself and just have the dealer activate it? What's a reasonable estimate for installation or activation?

Thanks!

It is unreasonable price. The official installation instruction states:

Installation time
The installation time is 1.0 hours, but this may vary depending on the condition of the car and the equipment in it.
Suggested installation time includes re-coding of the vehicle only for this retrofit kit. This time is based on a vehicle that is at the current software level and does not require any updates. Before installing this accessory into the vehicle, the vehicle should be connected to the DIS and checked for software updates. If updates are available the vehicle should be programmed prior to installing this accessory.

if you were one on our customer's i would suggest .5 hour to retrofit your alarm, given that it was installed correctly. we can claim a warranty software update prior to retrofit if you're car is not up to date.

I've read that 1er owners who have v81 DME with program 29.2 (post March 2008 build) should hold off on installing the alarm system. Apparently, there are installation/activation issues as it appears the alarm system currently retrofits properly with only earlier builds. It has been recommended to wait for the next program update which should hopefully address these issues. There were threads that discussed this topic earlier this year. Anyone, please correct me if I'm misinformed.

So Pre-March builds shouldn't have any alarm programming problems?

install yourself then take the car back to service department and tell them to code the car and charge the sales department for the coding! self install is easy, very easy, the only harder part is when you install the horn in the rear, you have to jack the car up and stick your hands in there other than that its super easy. not sure if v30.1 fixed the alarm issues with the 1er, can anyone confirm?

I'm gonna do the self-install...found the instructions on the net. It's so easy, even I can do it! lol

I'm gonna wait until the bugs are worked out though...I don't need the extra headaches.
