you can overcome the 0-60 disadvantage, but weight hurts more than just straight line acceleration do you think a 5000 pound car with 500 hp would be fun, not as much fun as a 3000 pound car with 300 hp |

I am curious, BMW cars are always heavy e.g. my ex-E36, I thought we all know that ? Okay, yes, Fck E90 , you need a M3 CSL. Or if you have money, there are plenty of aftermarket carbon fibre components that you can replace. e.g. hood. If you have no money to buy carbon fibre or a M3 CSL , just stop complaining okay.

Hey the engine is a first, Magnesium Aloy built. Thats gotta shave a few lbs off, not to mention the countless aluminum components used all throughout the car. Ideal placement of the engine gives our cars an almost perfect front:rear weight ratio.

If you want to compare it to a Lotus Elise and mix up oranges with apples, have it your way, but for the ultimate lightweight vehicule, may I suggest the tricycle? |

Maybe it's just a temperament issue, but my take on this thread is: Wouldn't it be nice if the E90 was lighter? Not: The E90 is a fat hog that cannot get out of its own way (even when the trunk eats ice cream...). Most of us agree that the E90 is a spectacular car that has an excellent power/weight ratio for its class, but that there always is room for improvement.
I do not get the adipose wars this thread stimulated. Hangovers? |

it's not just the E90, as we add luxury features and safety features all cars get heavier
when you look at motorcycles for comparison, a 10 year old bike weighs more and has much less HP than a current bike Bikes are getting more powerfull AND lighter. Car weights have been on the rise for years, and thankfully HP has come along with that but it's just that technology is focused on different areas compared with bikes. I don't think the E90 in particular is the guilty party, it's all cars in general that are too fat. The solution would be to have a 1 series available in the 2700 lb range with 225 hp (or more) |

Of course you could use aluminium for the frame, carbon fiber for the body, slimmer wheels and tires, plastic for the rear window, remove sound insulation, and what would you get? A car that would racket like an EVO for the price of an M5.

I just can't comprehend how people aren't for lighter cars
The E90's not a pig in it's class, but the whole class is getting porkier lighter=better handling and acceleration with less tire wear and less gas used if you drove a 330 and then a 330 with 500lbs of crap in the trunk I would hope most of you could tell the difference. just imagine how much better the driving experience COULD be |

The only way BMW has done to make the E46 'lighter'('faster') is to produce a M version of the E46. As that was not good enough for some more demanding people; so BMW has created an even lighter M3 version of the E46 which is called M3 CSL.
However, the E90's M3 and M3 CSL version (if exists) have not yet been available.

What is the point to have a lighter car and not any faster. It would NOT be cool if BMW released a lighter Clubsport version of the E90 because me and you have bought the E90 already! Cheers

"What is the point to have a lighter car and not any faster."
because the lighter car would out handle the heavier car.
