play in steering wheel

I have an e90 330 (Sport and Premium) with about 1250 miles on it. I notice a bit of very slight back and forth movement in the steering wheel at various speeds above 40 or so. Anybody else notice this? Is it the 18" wheels? I mean this movement is barely perceptible with my hands off the wheel, but unsure if it should be there.

Do you have active steering? I don't and I don't have any play. The steering is better than any other car I test drove (Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, etc)

You may be getting "tramlining" from the wide wheels. Its the wide wheels following curves and groves in the road and thus making the steering wheel move. This is normal for cars with wide tires

I noticed a bit of vibration at higher speeds above 50 mph. It doesn't happen all the time, but I did notice it from time to time. I'm planning to have my dealer rebalance the wheels and check the alignment.

There is another thread on this forum about "undefined center" with the steering. I didn't really notice that with my car as I feel it's very tight around the center.

Thanks all. I will check it out on various roads to help i determining if it is related to the wide tires and road conditions.

We have discussed this before. search for. "steering" or "undefined" or "around the center". You're not the only one....

Nuovotech: No, do not have active steering.
Gnosis: Saw that thread on the "undefined around center" thing, but wasn't sure what that referred to, and didn't think this was the same issue. Do you think it is?

Yepp - it's the same. I was thinking before that maybe it was a tiny amount of play in the steering because I had problems keeping the car straight without constant inputs.

But now I'm thinking. Hey - maybe there is no play and that what causes this is hyper-sensitivity may be something else. That the steerings natural will to self-center, and keep itself there, perhaps isn't so strong. Or something simlilar.

When driving on uneaven roads I can notice the steering wheel rocking a bit left and right. As if the wheel angles are to extreme. Like they don't isolate the steering wheel enough when driving in a straight line.

Whatever it is - something is not 100% ok in my book.
