What do you guys think of an:

18x8.5 +50 all around

Great for daily driving or tack AND can be rotated, not to mention a perfect winter set-up size.

I don't think that even has a chance of running in the front with a 255 tire without rubbing, does it...?

I think if you built a 18"x8.5" wheel that could fit on all 4 corners w/245-255 tires PLUS a 9.5" wheel for those that desire a bunch more rubber in the rear, you'd be on to something...

Ideally, I'll be running a staggered setup with lots of tire out back.

FYI ~ I'm not sure what you guys use, but I get a TON of use out of this calculator: http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp?postId=906 - unless you have something better, it'll be very useful working on a project like this...

Just as a side note, not sure if you are creating a whole new design. But I would like to see a powder coated finished, relatively light weight wheel (17 to 19lbs), five star split spoke style, with your recommended sizes and offsets.

Not unless I can run 255 all around. I want at least 255 in the rear, preferably 265, and 235-245 in front without needing stupid looking stretched tires that people market as aggressive...It just means it doesn't fit.

What I suggested was a wheel just for the general owners that just daily their 1ers, of course a wider width will have to be made for track purposes specifically to fit a wider tire without modifications to the body AND will be coilover friendly.

Such options as finish will be in the works, I do like the idea of a matte/satin finish. The 5 spoke slpit design is wanted as of the M6 style wheels and will look great on the 1-series.

but you most likely cant run a 255 tire on 8.5 in the front, so the back tire is going to be bigger anyways, and wont benefit from rotating them all around or w.e, so you might as well make the rears wider and just make it a higher offset. Isnt someone running 11 inch wide wheels with +62 offset and didnt even need to roll the fenders

Its a 18x10 wheel with a 62-62 offset.

Come on **********s,

The average 1 owner won't be buying upgraded wheels anyway so move your target market to the performance enthusiast section of the 1 owners. You would lose more customers with a setup that is not staggered like the oem setup already is. Notice the amount of non staggered setups on 1addicts vs.a staggered setup. that alone should convince you away from a non-staggered setup.

I have not owned a performance car for a long time and admittedly know very little about offsets, stagger, etc. Although I'm a little naive on the technical side of wheel/tire selection, I tend to research the hell out of something before I purchase. So FWIW I'll add what I will be looking for after I finally order my 1. As I said I am no expert so I'll keep it basic and non technical. Hope this will add some insight to the discussion.

-There has to be a solid improvement over stock (lighter weight, better traction, dial out some understeer etc.). I'm not looking to squeeze every last drop of performance from the available space but I want something noticeable and more than a just mild improvement. If all else fails, at a bare minimum, DO NO HARM!!

-Looks are IMPORTANT!
*I really don't like the stretched look. To me it looks out of place and awkward.
*I am looking for an aggressive yet understated look/stance. If that makes sense.
*M6 reps would be sweet! A good looking 5 spoke, or a CSL type of look.

-Being able to rotate the wheels on all for corners is nice but not a "must have".

-I don't want to have to modify the wheel wells or roll the fenders. But I would definitely consider it to get that "perfect" compromise.

-Keep the $$ reasonable.

-I will most likely do a mild suspension upgrade (springs and shocks). But it may be a year+ down the road so I will need a combo that works with a stock and mildly modded suspension.

-The best compromise between the above categories will get my $$.

Yes. I had 18x8.5 with 235/40-18 on all 4 corners on a previous M3 and I LOVED the setup.

look at the TR motorsports wheels made for the e46 m3... 18x9.5 et35 and 18x10 et25 is about the widest you can fit on an e46 m3 without rubbing problems. as soon as they came out with these, they sold out, and still cant seem to produce enough to satisfy the demand.

i'd be down for whatever is the absolute widest that can fit. high offset. 18" V710's would be my vote.

square or staggered... i dont care... as long as it's the most that will fit in the front and the rear, although i imagine there's more inboard room in the rear than the front, which would mean staggered.

Whatever can give me the best looks, light weight, and traction all in one wheel :headbang:. You never find a set of rims that has these 3 credentials..

I like the idea of 18x9 in the rear.. its not too wide, yet enough to get the job done.

As for the fronts, I like 18x8 or 8.5, whichever works out better for fitment (im not the smartest with wheels/tire fitments) But I want the widest you can get without having to roll the fenders lol. *im all about performance*

I like the 5 spoke idea :P

Yeah not anywhere near perfect unfortunately - (we don't want to just get around the problem by rolling fenders and stretching tires. The 1 needs a proper wheel).

That's honestly ALL I care about. Obviously it can't be UGLY, but looks come second to fitment and performance.

I think a 235/245 up front and 255/265 out back would do it for most people. That'll give plenty of options for people who want to run a square set up. Maybe not for rotation, but I'm more interested in the maximum amount of rubber.

I think your offsets are pretty decent, but I'm sure others know more than that.

you need to make wheels that are AS WIDE AS WILL FIT in the front and back have a high offset. this plus 50 offset 8.5 all around is totally lame. Think about it, you have to get custom wheels if you want 10's in the rear. Some people here are too conservative let them get their 8.5 inch all around wheels off tire rack or something. pfft get over it !!! ROLL YOUR FENDERS CUT THEM MAKE IT WIDE AND FLUSH !!
