My car sounds like a...thoughts?
My car sounds like a creaking wooden ship...the sound is coming from the drivers front wheel and comes and goes. It sounds exactly like a creaking wooden ship and is louder over bumps, but doesn't happen all the time. It happens when I'm driving straight, turning the wheel doesn't affect it. It been cold here lately and seems to have gotten worse...any idea what this could be?

Any serious bumps/potholes lately? Any chance for a video of the sound?

Video will be hard because it doesn't happen every time I drive...
Haven't hit any large bumps or potholes...sound started after a 150mile highway trip last week. It literally sounds like the creaking of an old wooden ship... |

Temperature may not be the reason for it IMO. Aren't the 1ers notorious for creaking sounds? I've seen many threads on sounds. My 2011 135 doesn't make any noise though. And it's like 20-30 degrees down in Texas right now.

Here's a thought... Have you torqued your wheel mounting bolts lately? A local shop forgot to tighten mine once, and as they worked themselves out from being just finger-tight, my wheel made some pretty strange sounds.

Update
I drove the car 140 miles. Wheel was making a lot of noise before hand, I said "oh well"...did the trip anyway (made no noise at freeway speeds and flat pavement)...Also on the way I stopped and ran car through a warm car wash. Its been under 30degrees out...The noise is gone...so far so good, I'll check back if it returns |

It's under warranty take it in. Most noises are heard for a reason. Lots of damage has resulted from people ignoring a noise. I would rather have it looked at and documented even if it is nothing.

Have this same noise since winter started. There is a TSB for "sway bar bushings", I've had them replaced twice with the updated design and I still get the noise in cold temperatures. Common problem with many BMW models.
I remember seeing a thread where they even replaced the entire front suspension and the sound still returned after a few days . |
