HELP from the states
Hey guys - just moved to Edmonton, Alberta from the states - and my 3rd day here I got popped for 142kmh in a 70kmh...
Anyone from the area mind telling me what I'm in for fine-wise, driving suspension, etc??? Anyone had similar that can share their experience - I'm unfamiliar with regulations/penalties in Canada and I'm pretty stressed out. Any help is much appreciated.... Thanks guys

Not sure about Alberta traffic fines, but in BC, next door, being over double the limit, and way over 30kph over the limit would get you a serious monetary fine and possibly a short suspension. Maybe some AB folk can help you out.

That is what i am hoping - back home in the states, where i am from, double the speed limit is automatic suspension for 6-months and they tow/take your car & Licesne away on the spot... Depending on the officer, they can even arrest you.
I am more than ok with a large fine - It was a lapse in judement and i shouldnt have been going that fast (granted, it was on an empty, 5-lane, arrow straight piece of road, so no danger to anyone other than myself) i got caught and i am ok paying for it.... Im just concered that i will: A) Lose my lisence entirely in Canada OR B) Go to jail ------ i am here on a temporary work visa and not a citizen so im not sure how i will be treated!!! Maybe i can plead "Dumb American"? since it was only my 3rd day in the country???

50+ km/h over the posted limit is 6 demerit points, big fine, as well as a mandatory court appearance. Not sure if you'll lose your license or not but they could very well make you take a defensive driving course or something like that. I'd try playing the "Dumb American" card, might help.

In ontario 50+ over is roadside seize of vehicle lmfao. Take it to court and they'll lower the charges. Definitely explaining yourself might help. If you have a good record, you should be okay. My dad had the opposite happen in Montana. It was a 40 he was going 80. Just paid the ticket because it was in a national park or something. No suspension or anything.

At least here in Ontario, you can ask for a court appearance and at your appearance, plead "guilty with an explanation". Highlight the deserted 5 lane road situation. Since your vehicle wasn't immediately impounded, that's lucky for you. You still have your Cali drivers licence so demerit points "may" not affect you but you are in for a big fine & maybe evening course on how to drive better. GL

What tickets police officer gave it to you? Was your car towed? In ontario driving over 50km/h =towing car for 7days and license suspendation for 3 days. This is 6 points playing guilty in court. -my 2 cents from my experience. Happend to me 3 times -ika |

So after a few calls - I was able to get ahold of the Crown Prosecutor.... Based on what he told me (he was actually a really nice guy) I am in for a fine in the range of $750 - $1200 and anywhere from a 7-10 day license suspension... I'll take it; compared to the states, that's LENIENT! And if I show up having already done a "defensive driving course" I'll likely not even get suspended and just get hit with fine - and because I still have a United States license - no demerit points! :-P I think I am VERY lucky
