BMW 1M Coupe Reviewed on Zandvoort track
BIMMERPOST NEWS 1M Coupe Reviewed on the Zandvoort track The guys at driving-fun.com recently had the opportunity to drive a Swedish owner's new 1M coupe (who seems to be making the rounds at the major European tracks with his new 1M -- first the Spa-Francorchamps and the Nurburgring) at the Dutch Zandvoort track. Here were their impressions of the 1M on the circuit. Google translated text: Quote:

Seriously lucky guys over at Driving Fun. Glad to see such a raving review. It has interesting statements comparing the 1M with the regular 1 series; Let the Subjective Rivalry Games (that dilute other great threads) begin .
The translation is horrid... Hopefully some Dutch or Flemish member has time and energy to improve on that. |

I'll give it a try, guys. i'll skip he introduction do!
Gran Turismo Events organizes on a regular base such trackevents. On those occasions you strumble over Ferrari's, Porsche's, Lambo and ....so on, only this time a 1M owned by an Sweed was also at the proms. When they talked to him he said he had the car for a week and in that time he tracked the car at Spa, on the Ring and now it was time to hit the Zandvoort track wich he had no former driving experience at. Ps: they mentionned also he had a special way of "riding in" his car (track wise) NO FALSE MODESTY On the track: with a speed over 240km you are approaching the next curve, short but hard breaking, steering in the corner and when you pass the apex you hit the throttle. On the following straigt line you feel the adrenaline - a nice tickel?? When you step into the car you immediatly notice that BMW made an unfortunatly bad choice in mounting those leather sportseats. All the other ///M models have M seats; So you'll have to do with "regular" sportseats and this in combination with leather will not provide the best bodysupport you'd wished for on a track. Especially in the first corners it'll take some time to adjust firmly unto your position. TYPICAL BMW SIX CYLINDER SOUND Apart from all of this you can experience some wonderful times with the 1M. We feared the whurst from the turbo engine, from wich we thought that it would never be as good as the fantastic engine of the 130i. From that side only good news, you even don't notice there's a turbomotor under the hood. Speaking of a turbolag, there is none and when you hit the throtlle you have a direct respons from the engine. Revving from low to the red line, the engine is always producing plenty of power. Only minor detail of the engine: lower max revving compared to atm. M engines as we know from the M3 and M5. The sound of the engine is the typical BMW six cyl. sound. When you're in the pitlane and they start the car it's sounds faboulous. It does'nt have the "unsteady" run that you could expect from a M car but more the civilized sporty sound of a 130 or 135. Wich is fine for everyday's use, but on a track you do miss some "expierencing" Because you wear a helmet on the track, a huge part of the noice (sound) is filtered, no. You don't have to interrupt a conversation, not even at full throtlle. EXPERIENCE A-OKE Dispite the filtered noice, you'll have your way in this car, especially thru the directness (swiftness), and surtainly when you push the MDM button, you feel the steering becomes heavier and reactoin on the throtlle becomes harsher. Offcourse it's not only about the engine and the expiriencing on a track. However it's something you can focus on whilest driving the 1M. The car is extremely well balanced so that your attention goes entirely to the track and engine. Borderline the car is slightly understeered but is'nt ennoiing at any moment. The thing you notice is that the undercarriage is not ferm enough for this track. If you drive in the direction of Scheivlak you'll notice the car dances a little. Furthermore is the car leaning over in fastcurves, by wich you get the feeling that the car is sitting just a little to high. Therefore does the Nurburgring suits the car far better Above all this, a car perfect for Zandvoort, would'nt be good car for public roads. JUST ABOVE THE TWO MINUTES Driving a car at 200km and still pulling it's nice to have some good brakes. During our testdriving on the track we came to the conclusion that they did their job very well and at no times there was any fading on the brakes. Well guys here comes the part where the Sweed leaves the track with his first set of tires worned down. And I will end this torture (first long translation) |

I rather wait for a real review from Chris Harris.
This story s comes from a 22 year old guy who was giving some instruction laps at the owner of the car because he didn t know the track. I don t even think the owner knows his car has been reviewed There are no official reviews yet from the greats like Harris. |

This is a complete less fatiguing translation (vs Google):
A great Car The introduction of the BMW 1 M Coupe took its sweet time. Between the first images and the Dutch release date is a period of almost one year. In July 2010 BMW showed the first still camouflaged images and on the 30th of April this year the orange monster will be in the showroom for the first time. Our patience would be tested even further, as we could only drive the 1m for the first time at the end of May. That changed when last weekend we had the keys given to us... Gran Turismo Events organizes track events on a regular basis. Usually you'd trip over Ferraris, Porsches and Lamborghinis. This time around it included a Swedish owner of an 1M. He was breaking in his car in a most special way. In that week he had already been to Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, so he had to move on to the Zandvoort track. It was the owner's first time at Zandvoort. He kept a handsome pace, but did have the feeling that his car would be capable of more if its driver knew the track better. That was the moment we were handed the keys Not Modest "On the track. With over 240km/k you'll approach the next curve. Short and firm braking, turn-in and when passing the Apex your right food is already taunting the engine. At the following straight stretch you'll feel the adrenaline rushing through your body - a welcome tingle." The brochure was not at all modest about the intentions and the capacities of the 1M. So we had to see it for ourselves. On entering one immediately notices the poor upholstery choice BMW made with the leather sport seats. Where in other M models M specific seats are found, the 1M has just 'regular' sport seats. In combination with the leather their hold is less than desirable on a track. Typical BMW six cylinder sound Regardless, you can have a real good time with an 1M. We feared the worst because we could not believe that a turbo engine could be as fantastic of an engine as the 130i. on that topic, there is good news: you don't even notice that there is a turbo engine under the hood. There is no noticeable turbo lag and the throttle response has a very direct response. From the bottom to the red line of the rev range, one has ample power from an enjoyable engine that sweeps its range perfectly. The sound the engine makes is the typical BMW six cylinder sound. When the engine is started in the pits, it sounds great. The car doesn't have the flutter one might expect from an M, but a rather the civilized sportive sound of the 130i and 135i. For daily driving that's of course no problem, but on the track you do miss out on some of the experience. Wearing a helmet a substantial part of the sound is damped out. No need to interrupt a conversation when going full throttle. The experience is solid Otherwise the experience is solid. In spite of the dampened sound you'll have a great time in this car, also due to the directness. Especially in the M Dynamic Mode, because then the wheel turns slightly heavier and the throttle response is more aggressive. Of course on the track it is about more than just the engine and its experience. Though in the 1M you can prefectly concentrate on just that. The car has a really good balance, so you keep your attention on the track and the sound of the engine. On the edge, the 1 M has a light understeer, but at no point that becomes distracting. You'll notice the chassis being slightly too soft for the track. When going curbe side the car dances a bit. On top of that the car leans quit a bit in quick turns, which brings the impression that it is just too high on its feet. That does make a perfect car for the Nürburgring though. Also a car that would be perfect for Zandvoort would no longer be enjoyable on public roads (red: the NLD/EU roads are on average a fair bit smoother in than the US). Slightly above 2 minutes For a car that has ample pull above 200km/h it's comforting to have a set of good brakes. For as much as we could test the brakes, they were quite adequate. On the track they held their ground. At no point during our 1M drive the brakes faded. Still the owner of the car left early. This had no relation with the brakes but with the tires. The car was one week old, but had already seen quite some track. After 30 laps on Spa-Francorchamps, 10 laps on the Ring and almost a full day on Zandvoort, the first set of tires were worn out. This unfortunately prevented the recording of a lap time, which would have been cumbersome anyway due to several novice track day drivers. On a fresh set of tires a lap time of slightly above two minutes seems realistic. It was fantastic to play around with the 1M on Zandvoort. This was far beyond our expectation of a 135i on steroids- it is a real M. The car inspires confidence and can be tossed around the track effortlessly. At the end of next month we can continue our acquaintance when we'll take out the 1 M for a couple of days. We can't wait as it is a great car. Last edited by eeghie; 04-16-2011 at 06:36 PM.. |

I don't know what the designers were thinking when they stuck fabric in places like the dash, where they should have used aluminum. Other than that, it's a real driver's car.

^^^ Dude, dont lecture me. I'm perfectly calm, and very entitled to voice my opinion. I just don't see eye to eye w/u. 1) if you were RBR and had one week to get KERS working, but didnt... Wouldnt you give the working car to the driver who's be hotter as of late??? 2) IMO, Petrov had PLENTY of time to get to the side and not fuck everyone else's qualifying up. His car sounded sick for 2 turns, but he figured he could save it.
Regardless, I'm looking forward to a good race. |

The same car did a few laps @ Spa and the Ring and still the brakes are fine, as I read it. Kudos to BMW to have their stuff(brakes) finally upgraded, or ???.... Congrats to Rico Peter and Perry @ DF. Cheers Robin |

The dash is the correct place for fabric. The trim is strange but a fabric or material type dash is found in many sports cars to reduce sun glare when on the race track at high speeds.
