Water pump went out

Yesterday my water pump went out (I believe)

got the yellow thermostat across my LCD screen, limp mode, etc.

I'm going to replace water pump today (no I did not drive it today)

I'd like to test the water pump once I get it out to ensure that's the issue and not a stuck thermostat, can anyone confirm the putting a 12v power source and a ground on the electrical connection will turn the internal propeller if it is good?

I plan on buying pump and returning if this is the case (might be hopeful thinking) but I'd like to be able to verify the problem so I have peace of mind that the issue is taken care of.

If this is an invalid test, is there a more concise way to test the water pump?

This probably doesn't answer your question, but removing the thermostat and pump are such a hand in hand procedure that you might just want to do a preemptive replacement of the pump for a little piece of mind considering how unreliable they are.

How many people have replaced just the water pump and not the thermostat? Does the thermostat fail like the pump or is it just a convenience to change them both?

How many miles are on your car? What is typical for the WP and Thermostat?
Thanks

54,000 miles

water pumps go on these go all the time; kind of a well known issue with them

I followed the steps in the DIY section however they are outlined for a N52 engine--anyone that has replaced it on a N55 or N54, do I have to drop intercooler to drain radiator or is there another location (like the pump itself) that I can drain from??

I'm half way through, have everything clear to get to pump, just need to drain and swap them out

Go to the bavauto blog and they have a great video on the step by step of replacing both. Don't need to drop the intercooler at all.

Wouldn't want to do that job on a driveway.

It's almost definitely your water pump. You can run the coolant bleeding procedure:

-Open coolant reservoir
-Key on, engine off
-First fan setting
-Heat maximum
-Key off
-Key on, engine off
-Immediately press the throttle down all the way for 12 seconds

Is there water squirting across the top of the coolant expansion tank? No!? Your water pump doesn't work so good!

This one seems like a PITA DIY job, due to lack of access. Not looking forward to it on my N55 with 62,000Kms. Is this covered under base warranty? If so, I hope mine goes before 80,000Kms/50,000Miles...

yes it'd be covered under the 50k mile Warranty; I'm at 54k and being FBO I didn't even try to negotiate with dealer. Its a known issue--just gotta be prepared for it to happen.

ECS Tuning really came through for me with quick parts delivery and job isn't as bad as you think. I'm laying on my back in garage and still its been an easy job

Also, I believe the mounting bolts are aluminum and you should buy new ones as opposed to using the existing.

That looks like a PIA job to do! At least you got a 2 day reprieve from being profiled by your local PD!
