Tipping a Service Advisor for Exemplary Service
I didn't have the greatest luck with BMW service when I first bought my CPO. There were a lot of trips back and forth to the dealership for the same problem. That was until I was assigned to my current service adviser. He has been awesome! He has really gone out of his way to help me. This visit I needed a oil change, plugs some other maintenance services. My 3rd taillight also broke. My free maintenance and warranty ended on the 9th(I'm in CPO now). Even though it was only 8 days out they could have given me a hard time. Instead of charging me the $700 the waived everything.
I would like to do something nice for my SA instead of the standard Dunkin Doughnuts. Anyone give a monetary gift to their SA? How much $50? $100? |

Honestly, I'm absolutely against giving people money as a bonus for doing their jobs well. If you feel they did a good job, get them a present. For example: drop in and ask him/her what kind of beer or wine they like. Be somewhat personal. You may be surprised at the response you get.
A small but more personal gesture will be more appreciated and remembered than a lump of cash, or even a gift card. Give it a shot.

Good ratings & send a personal note to his boss about how he makes you feel about the dealership.

It's SO RARE to find people that go out of their way for you inside the shell that is, "their occupation (or job)", that it's a really amazing thing once you find one... Doing something nice for them speaks more to them than any "survey" where they get the "jam of the month club" for 4.5 stars... The "proof" to this would be your amazement at the SA.. You completely expected different going in and on all expiration dates, etc.. He didn't have to do that. Most likely He did because of your history and how you were cool about it. I've gone out of my way and spent huge money, knowingly replacing stuff that wasn't our company's fault for customers and have rarely had to buy good wine in the past six years with an occasional bonus case at the holidays.. My personal opinion is that small gifts are good when it really calls for it.. But never cash, as it's too impersonal for the effort they showed you to make it personal in the first place. All I can say is that those little things pay off huge in the future.... |

It sucks because you think good service should just be something you get but no,I figure if someone is exceptional at their job and provide a SERVICE they should get a tip. My BMW broke down I tipped the tow guy when he picked up my car and dropped it off without me.

I have sent my SA an Edible Arrangement after my last 4 service apps. She goes way above what is expected and gives me the best loaners. I know loaners are part of the program but the last time she made sure I had a 535i when my car was in service for two days.

I've given my SA a bottle of wine in the past. Of course, you never know if someone drinks (or, worse yet, if they're an alcoholic!). But in general, I find that just being really pleasant, and showing your appreciation, goes a long way. Knowing how difficult most customers can be, just being nice will make you stand out.

I consider my service rep to be exceptional. I always note it in the evaluation submitted afterwards. He must be informed of this because he has thanked me on several occasions for my input. |

I don't do tip for a job well done, that's the standard one should expect from BMW. Go to a Lexus dealer and the average dealership will still offer better service than the best BMW dealer.
If my dealership/service experience is good, I'll make note in the follow-up surveys I get asked to participate in post-service. I do tip for other services however, e.g. car detail. |

Thanks everyone for their suggestions! I felt like my SA deserved more than a great survey. I ultimately gave him a Visa gift card with a hand written thank you card. He called me 5 minutes after I left once he opened it. He was very, very appreciative.
