Genewho??? I tell you what, take him on a few races. 1.4 mile, twistees etc. He'll win a few sure. Then after a few years both of you sell your vehicles and then the master rises to the top of the pile. With both of them sitting side by side I am sure that people that come to see them will say, "Genewho? Man that 1er is cool, how much?" That works for me anyday.

I raced my boy on his 3.6 V6 genesis coupe (with an intake) and I smoked him after 3rd gear (I'm completely stock, just K&N drop in filter). This 345hp genesis is completely new to me :/

Last time I drove them was the '12 versions. The 6 version is heavy, steers badly (lots of understeer), makes the 135i with M Sport/RFTs ride like a 79 Caddy. Clutch take up isn't linear and the 6 speed is rubbery. Grabbing 2nd to 3rd gear change is tricky. I took out three different new ones off the lot and 2 out of 3 were rattling with less than 50 miles on each. After that, decided to buy an RX8 instead. There's a lot of content for the money and a lot of aftermarket parts, plus the warranty is pretty good. In the long term, probably cheaper to maintain than the 1 series but if it tires you out driving it, it's not fun.

I personally don't understand why we have these threads, 135i vs Genesis, M3 vs Mustang, etc. It's obvious there's always going to be a better "value" car in terms of price/hp but it's the complete package that allures us buyers. Coming from a G35x sedan, I can confidently say it was one of the best cars I've owned in terms of what the average buyer expects. It was extremely reliable, the interior and exterior trim held up fine well past 100k, and it offered many features standard (xenons, leather, etc.) that its competitors (3-series) would charge a premium for. But the car lacked soul, I hated driving it everyday on my 2.5hr round trip commute. It felt like a giant appliance and there's nothing worse than spending 35k on something you can't relate to. And that's the difference, nobody buys a BMW based on practical expectations. As cliche as it sounds, it comes down to the driver experience. I've never driven a Genesis and maybe their owners do feel some connection it, but there are plenty of former G35/TL/Sti owners here that've made the switch and never looked back. You can't expect a non-BMW owner to understand what it's like to drive this car -- it emotes aspects of the driving experience these other cars can't replicate. But does that make their cars any lesser? Not at all, just comes down to what you want. If you want cheap thrills, easy mod-ability and low maintenance (all sensible things from the 'typical' buyer), then the Stang, Genesis, Sti, Si are for you. But if you want a car that'll get you from A to B with a huge grin the entire time, then the E82/88 is probably the right choice for you. Btw I'm not some BMW fanboi, I feel the same way about other cars, ranging from VW to Porsche. I was pretty close to picking up a Golf R and would've taken that over a Sti any day even though I know the Sti would've blown its doors off in a 1/4 mile race. |

I had a Sonata SE prior to my 128 and almost bought the Genesis....The quality was excellent but there was something about the German cars that kept calling me... I am past the street rodder phase in my life and really am enjoying having the 1 series.
Also I see more younger genre driving the Jap/Korean cars than the germans just my observation.... |

I was able to use a 3.8 R-Spec for a week. I have to say that I was VERY impressed with the car. It was a total blast to drive. I really don't have anything bad to say about it, other then the Hyundai name it carries detracts from the car at least for me. If it had a different badge, I wonder if perceptions about the car would be different.
In an article I wrote about the car (can read here), have a dyno plot for the car. It did well. Funny story... My friend whose the owner of the shop I went to said "f-n Hyundai" when I pulled up. He got in the car and said it's actually pretty nice. After the dyno runs and putting up on the lift, his opinion about the car changed. AND then when he asked about the pricing, I told him our test car was $29,625 including destination and before any negotiation. He said yeah, but how much is this version with all of the goodies. That was the price! So you're getting a brand new car with strong warranty for that amount of money. I just bought my 2009 135i with 45k miles on it for around $25k. For $5k more, I could have owned a brand new car. Of course I opted for the BMW for various reasons (biggest one being a convert.). Then when you look at new BMW 135i pricing, $10k difference is something to be said.

The Genesis is a car that looks good on paper. I have driven a 2010 2.0T 6MT R-Spec, and a 2013 2.0T 8AT. Both transmissions were TERRIBLE. The engines were wheezy and asthmatic, and the insufferable transmissions made driving a chore. They are fine for pedestrian motoring, and people who don't know any better.
The 135i is a car that looks good in person. As others have stated, you'll find that the "300" hp of the N54/5 is a lot more potent, than the 300+ of the Genesis V6. In terms of overall dynamics, the Bimmer is far superior, street, or track.

Compare the 135 to the 3.8 not the 2.0. That's like comparing the 3.8 to the 128.
On a Dynapack with a 3.8 - The day we completed our testing, it was 91 degrees outside which is not ideal horsepower producing temperatures. Yet the car tested well producing 305.5 horsepower at 6,789 RPM and 257.6 lb-ft of Torque at 5,742 RPM at the wheels. The car was totally stock.

The 3.8 R-Spec does have the LSD standard. For the money it's not bad. I just wasn't that impressed with driving it although the electronic nannies are a bit more lenient than the 135.
It really compares more to the Camaro and Mustang.

If you look where Hyundai was 20 years, and even 10 years ago, they made great strides. They still need work on NVH and suspension tuning, but give them a few more years and they'll be right in the mix. It's still an automotive appliance IMHO in the present state.
Look what BMW did with the electric steering. No one can say it was an improvement. My wife is still trying to figure out the BMW naming convention. Just when I thought she got it, the 3 coupe becomes the 4, the previous 1 becomes the 2 and a new 1 will be a front driver. I'm waiting for the BMW 4.535ixi to be released. I guess we should be thankful that we can still put two hands on the wheel, press the gas pedal, and hit the brakes. The day is coming where more nannies will take over, no matter who manufactures it. BTW: the Genesis coupe still sucks.

If you are magazine racing then yea the genesis has a chance, real world torque and driver skill, n54 or n55 would walk that car
Genesis hp is not real hp, those cars are overated from factory I test drove a genesis sedan , which was a very comfy cruiser for highway duty.

I think on a road course both in stock trim the Genesis 3.8 R spec would keep things close enough. Add $10k in mods (as that's about how much more the BMW costs new), and I'd go with the Genesis.
I have never owned a Genesis and like the looks / convertible aspect of the 135i that I own. Still have respect for the Genesis. Quote:
Already posted information about the test, but...
