Camera Rigs..

Anyone here built or bought a setup? Thinking I may subject my 7D to some rolling action if I can find/figure out a decent setup that wont break the bank

Anyone have some great shots or tips?

If he is going for the type of photos I think he is, like this (taken by a friend of mine), then he wouldn't be driving down the road with it attached to his car. Shots like that, most of the time, the car is barely crawling, if its even running in the first place. Sometimes the car is pushed if you can keep the pushers out of frame. With the long exposure settings needed, driving the car at anything more than a crawl will cause vibration issues in the shot, ruining the photo. He normally rolls the car just enough so he can easily walk next to the car and camera to fire the shutter.

A long sturdy pole, suction mounts, mount the camera (usually upside-down at the end of the pole), wide angle lens, very slow rolling, long exposure, and mad photoshop skills.

I know most of the steps my friend takes to achieve photos like that, however I won't go into great detail and he doesn't like to tell. He might give you some info though if you'd ask him. Send him a comment on Flickr.

Bingo Sylon! The cars are never running.. too much vibration. Just a long shutter speed and good shove!

BTW- I have a gopro. IQ versus my 7D is brutal for still shots. I usually use the thing clamped to the outside of the airplane though.. Which reminds me. I should probably edit some of that footage and post some vids

I used to be a camera rig a while back.

Assuming you are shooting at the track, I would strongly recommend you get a GoPro or Contour HD. They are much lighter cameras and require a lot less rigging to attach to your car. They also come with very wide lenses which makes the vibrations from your car significantly more forgiving. With all things, there is always the chance of the unexpected. GoPro's and Contours can take an amazing amount of beating. I have had GoPro's fall of cars a few times and only once had to replace the clear plastic covering because it scratched around the lens.

This happened to one of my Contours...

You can rig your 7D to your car, but I strongly suggest against it unless if you are manning the mounted camera. For example if it were mounted to a door and you could man it out the passenger window or if it were mounted on the back of a car and you filmed through the trunk. An unmanned 7D on auto will not look much better than one of the new GoPros.

Also, make sure you have a good UV filter on your 7D. I once had a rock shoot up and put a nice chip on one of my filters.

The gopro and contour are great video cameras.. and have a purpose.. but thats not what I'm looking for.

the intention here is a stable platform for some low speed (read: car being pushed) and a long shutter to give the appearance of movement.
