Can you take the car to the dealer of your choice to do recall or do they decide?

Got my letter this week. Still haven't scheduled, as the closest dealer is 90 minutes away. I wish they would just send me the parts, lol.

Had my 2012 135i done today at Braman BMW West Palm Beach FL. It's the driver's side airbag only and took about 1.5 hours. Got a free croissant sandwich and coffee, and checked out the new BMWs, Rolls Royces and Bentleys while I waited.

Got my letter today.
1 dealer 10 minutes away. Good dealer 20 minutes away. But I'm 4 hours away. 😀
Probably handle it within a couple weeks, but bigger fish to fry right now.

Be careful or they may give your airbag to another vehicle.

When I made the appointment last Thursday, which was for week out on this coming Friday, my SA made sure to tag the airbag to my car so another vehicle didn't get it before I got there. He implied this has happened and you then have to wait for the next available airbag.

Thanks!
Guess I'll call and at least make the appointment.

Funny I got something in the mail yesterday on the airbag so I got excited.

When I opened it basically it said we do not have the parts yet and we'll let you know when we do. I'm not holding my breath.

How is this different from what they have been telling me for the last 3 years?
Its not any different other than I got a pretty brochure this time.

Took mine this morning and got it done, took an hour exactly. To my surprise I wasn't expecting a brand new airbag cover. Looks like a brand new steering LOL!

Nice... I was going to ask if anybody got any damage to their steering wheel from the install. Thanks for posting the pic.

Cant remember, do they have to do the passenger airbag also? If so, probably another 2 yr wait....

According to my SA BMW has until the end of 2018 to decide if they want to include the passenger side.

2012 135i - I asked that question, yesterday, while having the drivers side bag replaced. I was told they are not replacing the passenger bag because it is a different manufacturer. Sounds funny, to me, but that is what I was told.

I did have both bags replaced on a 2003 325i.

STRANGE - Why would they wait if the part is defective?

I am pretty sure my X5 passenger side was the Takata, not sure if its the exact same part. Wouldnt make much sense if they are made by diff companies.

Its probably more BS, like whats the chances theres a passenger in the car at the time and that its faulty, its a numbers liability game... obviously there needs to be a driver haha. They could just send a warning not to use the passenger front seat lol

Reminds me of the quote from the movie Fight Club lol:

"A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."

Good question. Maybe they have to wait for a passenger airbag to blow up in some poor unsuspecting passenger's face before they'll take any kind of action. Wait, that hasn't happened yet, has it?

Or maybe it's as they told you; the passenger airbag is made by a different manufacturer. Does any anybody know about this for sure?

There is a difference. If you go to the site referenced on the glossy card: bmwusa.com/Takata and enter your model and year, you will see some additional information, "Final letters are scheduled to be mailed on or before September 30 2017 , repairs should be scheduled after receiving this letter."

Heck, that's only a few more days. I am all atwitter!!

I checked that site. Apparently I'm Priority 6.

Interestingly I noticed this while I was out there. It seems they sold lamost as many 1-series comvertibles as couples.

Series Model Model Year Approx. Volume Production Dates
E82 1 Series Coupe (incl. M) 2008 – 2013 32,620 Nov 2007 – Oct 2013
E88 1 Series Convertible 2008 – 2013 28,160 Nov 2007 – Oct 2013

dude they've made a mistake, if you look very carefully at the bottom of the wheel, part of the airbag is poking through ?

did you miss that ?
