Agree its probably not cost effective but want to leave the car as stock as possible while having some fun. Dinan has a close relationship with BMW so I feel its safe? The car will get driven less than a 1000 per year so its really just something to do/try lol.

I had the PPK installed before doing the Dinan S2. There's been a lot of back and forth about whether there are any residuals retained from the PPK when the S2 is flashed to the DME. I talked to Dinan directly about this and the answer is no. The PPK gets wiped which based on what I have read and learned about he DME makes total sense. So there is no additive effect with the PPK done first and then the S2 done after.

On the discussion about if there is a significant difference of the S2 over the PPK, I can say unequivocally, yes. Looking at the peak horsepower number is only one aspect of the S2. But the torque bump is another aspect...a very significant aspect. The PPK is rated to bump the N55 an additional 17 ft lbs. Now compare this to the S2 which is rated to bump the torque an additional 101 ft lbs. That is not a small and insignificant increase.

In addition, the area of under the power curve is another aspect of why the S2 is better than the PPK. There's just more power through the rev range. I lived with the PPK for about almost 3 years before doing the S2 tune. The differences are night in day in terms of throttle response and power delivery. As I stated in another write up I did here, the S2 should have been the way the car was delivered from the factory. A comparison I like to make is the S2 in normal driving mode is as good and a bit better than having the PPK with the Sport button active. Activating Sport mode with the S2 takes the car to a whole different level.

I agree with zx10guy's post above. Had PPK for years before I got Dinan Stage 2. Definitely feel the difference, especially the torque.

I will add that S2 sounds similar to PPK, meaning the burbling exhaust sounds during engine overrun (which PPK is known for) are still there.

I think it is possible that the benefit of the Dinan S2 is greater for those having an automatic/DCT vs. those having a 6MT. Any thoughts on that?

With all of the cars in my stable, my 135i Coupe is really basically my winter car, along with my Golf R. In the spring, summer, and fall, I would prefer to drive most of my other cars most of the rest of the time. Given the limited use I have for the car, and how I drive it, I'm thinking the benefit over the PPK would not be worth it for my 6MT version.

I have quite a few cars and do not drive any of them when salt is on the road, often in Pa. I drive my f350 or my Rav4 when it gets snowy or salt is down. I agree its more than likely not worth the cost for the tune over the PPK but since its relatively cheap I'm giving it a go for giggles.

They don't salt the roads in my neck of the woods like they do in the East and midwest. They use sand, with just enough salt to keep the sand particles separated. The result is that you do not see rusted out cars here like you do in some other areas.

All that having been said, I avoid driving in significant snowfalls, as I have no confidence in the rest of the driving public and don't look forward to getting run into.

Both sensors from the OEM Cat go into the aftermarket Downpipe but some tunes I believe avoids the cross check between one sensor and the other so you don?t get a code thrown.

From what I gathered Dinan tune does not work with Catless Downpipe?

well unless the tech is misinformed.. wich mind u this guy was listen on dinans site.. he says for it to "work" u need a spacer.. and even with the spacer it might still throw codes..
from previous homework.. u buy the catless dp.. then code out the part.. so it would be the dp and the seal if urs is all fucked..
this is the first I hear of a spacer for dinan.. or a spacer for any tune for that matter..
the could be wrong.. that's why I was bringing it up I know theyr some seasoned vets on here..
