135i Manual Transmission Fluid Change
Just did the transmission fluid change on a 2009 135i with the 6 speed manual transmission, and took some pictures/video along the way. It's actually a very easy process to do. I used Redline D6-ATF fluid.
After driving it, I noticed that the shifter slides into gear more easily, and the notchy feel has been reduced particularly when it's cold. I took the advice of 'wolfe' on this forum and took a sample of the old fluid. It certainly looked dirty after about 20,000 miles. Both the old and new fluids seem very thin compared to typical gear oil (like 75W-90) just from how fast they drain. Hope someone finds this useful - comments welcome! 2009 135 Manual Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill -Joe |

Maybe the factory plugs have enough depth as to allow the shank of your tool to grab the plugs instead of only the "ball head" taking the grunt/load. Btw... why did n't you post your photos in the DIY writeup for changing your tranny fluid? Dackel |

I didn't post in the other thread since that was for the 128i - but I will do that. The reason for using the ball head was because it was the tool I already had.
You are absolutely correct - a better tool would be a regular allen - that said, the drain plugs were not particularly tight. -Joe |

Thanks so much for the advice and the write up. I chose Redline D4 and I am very happy with the results. Instant flawless shifting and my 2nd gear "notch" is completely gone!
