I don't have Logic 7 in my BMW. Does regular HiFi has the OEM AMP in the in the same spot as Logic 7? (behind driver seat,in the back fernder pretty much) So from my understanding all I need to do is to tap speaker wire (in the location of OEM AMP) with PAC Trunk LOC then connect RCAs to Trunk LOC as well as the remote wire itself since PAC Trunk LOC has remote wire feature and then just run it to aftermarket amp. Is this is correct? Once again thanks for your help.
Very cool, man! If you already have a 12W6, then I'm sure Ben can try to accommodate; however, I promise you wouldn't be disappointed with a 10W7, if you're worried that a 10" sub is too small (I'm sure the 10W6 pounds, as well, but have only heard a 12W6 in-person). The standard OEM HiFi system does have an amp, as well, but it's in a closer and easier to access location than the Logic 7 - it's actually right behind the panel you need to remove to install Ben's enclosure! There's FAR less hassle involved with your suggested setup than mine, since the entire rear seat and side panel had to come out to do mine.

The rest of the details regarding the PAC Trunk-LOC that you asked about are dead-on. It takes a little bit of work to splice in and get everything set, but it's really not too bad once you've done it. Just take your time and do the job right - it's worth the effort!

Maxim, I would recommend the PAC Trunk-LOC that Jason is using. That's actually the LOC I wanted to use, but could not source it locally (and I didn't have patience to order it online!). I ended up with just a regular LOC and have to run the remote wire from the fuse box behind the glovebox. Using the trunk-loc would have saved me time, but I was eager to install my sub/enclosure as soon as I was done.

Thanks for the compliments guys!! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

No problem - glad you liked it! And thank you for creating the thread that Ben decided to post his pics up in... I probably wouldn't have my enclosure if it wasn't for that discussion!

what eq settings do you speak of from the stock unit? is this something that comes with the premium bmw sound? (that would explain it i suppose, i didn't get the premium sound)

edit: also, with the amp mounted in the boot like that.. where would you mount an amp if you were going to throw components in the fronts? any ideas/plans on specific parts for a component setup?

Yeah, I have the Logic 7 system, which is where the EQ settings come from.

You can mount the amp underneath the rear deck in the trunk (the actual deck, opposite the floor). My buddy has a JL Audio 1000/1 mounted there, which is nearly double the width of my 500/1 and much heavier. Fits very well and looks quite clean.

I don't plan on messing with the components at all because I think this setup sounds very good as-is. I won't say that I haven't heard better, but the gains would be marginal for the additional $1000 (or more) that I'd end up spending to upgrade the rest.

How loud do you listen to your music (and what type of music if you don't mind me asking)? It's hard to believe the stock components can keep up with the W7 without pretty bad distortion.

can you list all the audio equipment you have installed in your car for me? (or direct me to the info)

thanks

Depending on the gain setup of his amp for the W7 determines whether or not the stock component speakers can keep up doesn't it? I am pretty sure the amp is just a mono setup to drive the sub alone.

Generally I don't crank it REALLY loud unless it's a song that I really like or I'm showing off the system for a friend; otherwise, it's generally just slightly higher than what your average person would listen to it.

If you read some previous posts, I've mentioned that the W7 is an exceptional sub for producing more than just noise (like most "big" subs). It's ability to reproduce good sound is actually pretty phenomenal and I tune the system accordingly.

I have the gain on the amp set exactly as it should be where the sub doesn't distort when the bass level is flat and the volume is cranked all the way up. The EQ is set so that the sound is clean according to my listening tastes; however, when I really want it to pound (or just show off), I can crank the bass up a few notches and it *really* unleashes fury.

My taste in music really varies. Everything from hard rock to alternative, rap, techno and even occasionally classical works. The only thing I don't really care for is country. Lately I've been listening to a lot of The Beatles and Beastie Boys.

This tune is a mash-up of both groups. The low-end bass in the song is pretty ludicrous, yet separated from the beat of "Let It Be," so it really lets all aspects of the system shine. Needless to say, it sounds FANTASTIC in my car!

yeah, but if you crank it the components would likely tap out (apparent distortion and lack sq) a lot quicker than the subs.. which is why i wonder how loud he listens to his music. ive heard plenty of systems with only subs added, 9/10 times the subs drown the components to death

edit: after reading your post, im happy with what im reading. i have a set of components/amp, 2 12" subs in box/amp + headunit with all wiring etc. that was only used for a few months from my previous car.. really not sure what to do with it b/c ill be taking a big hit by selling them off. seems like thats my only choice though, definitely don't want to put the 2 12's in my 135 and the components won't fit. additionally, also don't want to install a headunit into this car... sell them off, pickup used equipment to fit the 1er i suppose :T

Just take it one step at a time and sell the stuff off later, if need-be.

Also, I forgot to give you a list of audio gear that I'm using, which really isn't that vast... Click on the link in my signature, which will take you directly to my "BMW Garage" - it has a list of everything used to build my setup in there.

Here is my plan for audio gear:

MB quart PVI 210 4" components up front
MB quart 4" 2 ways on rear deck
PPI 4 channel amp A600/4

JL audio 10W3 4ohm
PPI bridged pcx (325 watts)
Ben's super cool stealth box

Audiocontrol LC6i with sub control (12 V)

I have stock standard system (6 speakers) so i am ordering door moulding from BMW with speaker mounts too.

I am building it slowly at the moment (cost effective).

Sounds like a really nice plan. Very anxious to hear your thoughts and see some pics!

mineo77... You happen to have part numbers for what you need to order for the door pillar speaker mounts? As you may remember I wasn't able to get them to tweak my order for premium sound, but I def. want to add those additional speakers. Thanks!

dumb question gang, what's the setup for the standard 6-speaker system that comes with 2010 models now, and what's the 10-speaker system that's now "premium"? location and speaker specs I mean, for both setups. the info is appreciated, thanks!

Corner door mouldings (Left and Right) for HiFi tweeters: P/N 51337199597 and P/N 51337199598 = $34.69 each.

Front doors: 4"
Underseat woofers: 6.5" in an integrated adapter. The SWS-8 8" subs fit there once you remove the 6.5".
Rear shelf: 4"

I changed my front components to Diamond audio hex s500s, they are 5.25" and mounting depth of 42mm, which works out in our cars. Still waiting for the door mounts, they are on backorder. Should be here in about 1-2 weeks per unitedBMW. Picking up my custom enclosure tomorrow...waiting for me at UPS. Install this weekend!!!

The custom enclosure looks sick, I will go for one if he's still building 'em! I'm just wondering should I even bother to put my 10" Kicker Comp in it, or should I do a sub/amp upgrade.

Do you happen to know, what are the additional two speakers in the 10-way setup? Adding the door pillars brings up to 8 total, where are those last two on the premium setup? Thanks!

the rear deck speakers are actually components as well, so that makes 4 speakers in the back. Putting a kicker comp 10" would be good, but you need an amp to power it. Do you have an amp for your sub?

Yeah I do, it actually pairs pretty nicely with the Kicker, it's a Pioneer 300W GM-X562, bridgable 2-channel amp. I used to use this setup in my Toyota Echo heheh. :-)

i would then rec going with a Ben's custom enclosure and running that set up for the subs. Run another amp up front to some components or 2-way's if you dont want to run tweets in the door pillars
