Another broken Windshield
I need to replace the windshield and I have a few questions. I assume it is the same as a 135 coupe with rain sensor. My questions are is it green and does it have a green band at the top? Also does it have a condensation sensor? It looks like there are two sensors by the mirror.

I'm color blind so I can't see what is there. According to Safelite's site, only a green glass is available on the 135s. I'm hoping it is the same for the 1M

Acording to RealOEM.com the 1M's front windshielf is: 51317165509 $349 for the glass winshield. But you will also need new seals, a new rain sensor and the special expoxy for the windshield. In the end it will cost about $1,200 USd.
The same windshield is used for 126i/135i/1M US models acording to RealOEM.com I had my 135i's windshield replaced just after I pickup my new car in 2010. A stone cracked the windshield - I had a huge crack start to spread across the glass. Over here the windshield was only 330 euros... but the end price was 1,200 euros! (tahts with a new rain sensor, seals, ect...) I had to pay my 300 euro deductable for glass - sucks. Now... I need a 2nd windshield due to another stone impact. I had my dealer do the install and I went with BMW glass. In the states you have PPG who makes glass and OEM Sekurit(Sp?). The PPG glass is more resistant to stone impacts... but scraches easier. The Sekurit glass shows less scratches/wear... but is more prone to stone chips. I would always use Sekurit glass. Dackel |

Thanks guys. I have PPG glass in my MB and Chevy Nova. It has worked great so I'll stick with it. Given my luck with chips, that is more important than scratches. My local Safelite dealer does an awesome job of installing glass. I needed to make sure it used the same glass as the 135 and if I needed the condensation sensor. It looks like there are two sensors in the mirror area.

Due to the 1M being so young, Safelight will have no choice but to give you OEM. The window is the same as a 135i and does not have a color strip at the top green or grey. The glass you are looking for is the Pilkingson with BMW logo. Like I said Safelight should give that to you, if you do require a full replacement. Good luck!

The Safelite guy showed up today, but they needed to order the genuine BMW molding. What they have doesn't work. He had the glass, but I didn't think to look and see what brand it was. It will take a few days for the molding/rain channel to come in. I'd imagine the new molding will raise the price a little.
The installer seemed very knowledgeable. He told me he didn't think he had the right molding when he showed up. He took one look at the car and knew what to order from the local dealer. Hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the week. the crack is getting bigger. |

The parts finally came in and the windshield is fixed. The best news is the cost went down using BMW parts. It seems strange, but Safelite was able to get the windshield and molding cheaper from BMW than from thier own supplier. I also learned that if I had paid the dealer to do it, the dealer would have called Safelite and charged me 3X as much. I was able to watch them do the entire job and they did fantastic. I'm very happy. A couple of pics
Look ma' no windshield. |

Glad you got everything fixed, thx for sharing
what did you end up paying for the replace then? Since you have a fully loaded car, can you explain on the little lump underneath the rear view mirror. Is that the alarm low profile LED? I'm interested in a picture when the LED is on?? |

Good to hear that there are quality safelite technician's out there. I've had nothing but bad experiences with them. Glad everything worked out well for you...

It may be this area, but they've replace three windshields for me and they have all been flawless. The tech new exactly how the windshield, seals molding and plastic came off and went back on. It only took him 40 minutes. |

Replaced the windshield again in October ...
. that makes it the third in the car ... factory, the one I replaced in June due to a rock I picked up crossing the George Washington (NYC) ... . now I have a "whistle" ... a month later and I still can't get used to the noise, thought I could live with it, but cannot ... . so, now I have it scheduled for my forth windshield installation on Thursday. I hope this goes well.

i have a cracked windshield as well. thank you ohio construction. was STOPPED for a construction vehicle to pass and when it did, it dropped a stone on my windshield 2 weeks after owning the car. bmw in charlotte orders the glass and installs it themselves (in charlotte anyway). they also leave the car sit, so that the sealant can cure for 24 hrs. during that time they give me a 335d to drive. i think i'd rather go this route than deal with a crappy install. the construction company's insurance is hopefully going to cover everything anyway, so we'll see how things turn out. right now the car is in the shop anyway (getting the wheels painted gunmetal this week). |

Or... they let the car sit while they call a glass vendor like safelite to do the install.. (hehehehe).. But seriously.. if they actually do the work themselves.. more power to them.. |

And I'll say it again.. pretty sure Safelite doesnt make glass..just like Jiffy Lube doesnt manufacture oil. In both examples.. they are VENDORS that likely have multiple items that they can sell. Jiffy lube probably has several types of oil... Kendall.. Quaker State.. Castrol.. etc... they are a vendor that can sell any one of those oils. Safelite I am sure has many options, and can install OEM glass, or aftermarket glass. See Dackel's comments above on two of the possible options for glass for our cars. It sounds like your insurance company spec'd for aftermarket glass.... but in no way should that be blamed on safelite.. They just installed what your insurer authorized them to install, and I am sure that that was based on the fact that your auto policy allows for the insurance company to specify like/kind and quality instead of OEM. So... go ahead and badmouth your insurance company.. not Safelite... and then also read your insurance policy . As others have mentioned in this thread (which you should go back and read, since it is back from the dead as you mention) in some situations they received OEM glass from Safelite.... either because there was not an aftermarket glass available or because they requested OEM glass (and an insurance company wasn't involved to dictate otherwise). btw... 1M fan is very much correct.. in many cases the dealer will call a company and sublet the glass installation... And if it's via an insurance company.. the dealer will actually probably add on their own 15-25% markup over and above the glass vendor... they get that markup for making a phone call. Actually, Safelite makes the glass for the 135 which fits the 1M, but it is the wrong color of tint. On mine, Safelite called the local BMW dealer and ordered the correct OEM windshield and seal. The correct part number is still on the windshield as pictured above. The best news was Safelite charged me $455 for the complete, flawless install.
If I had BMW fix it, they would have ordered the same parts, and called Safelite to install them, charged me $1200 for the exact same service. The dealer doesn't actually install windshields. If Safelite would have used the wrong 135 windshield that they stock, the cost would have been over $500. It was actually cheaper to use the correct, OEM, BMW parts. Go figure!!! |

Insurance companies may want Safelite to use cheaper glass which is not that unusual.
