The speedo will ALWAYS read HIGHER than actual road speed. This is because there a German law mandating this. So when you are cuaght speeding you can not say my speedo was reading slow. They always read HIGH!

A guy I know who had a e60 M5 had the speed limiter taken off by a tuning company. No tune, just the limiter taken off: 1,600 euros IF I remember right. His speedo would read 330kph but he was "only" 312 kph.

As far as high speed runs go... an e92 M3 would be a better tool for that. Mainly because of the longer wheel base. The 1er's get real twitchy at speeds about 170 kph. Somethings help like bigger wider tires and M3 suspension bits... but still it is what it is.

Now that I have a tune the highest I have seen is 6,300 rpms (but I ran out of clear autobahn!) instead of the 5,400 rpms that I saw before at 240 kph.

And btw... I have hit the limited v-max with just 1/4 to 1/2 throttle - you do not need to be WOT to hit the speed limiter.

Just so you guys know... here are the preset speed limiters in BMW's cars

210 kph - without M-sport package #840 higher speed limiter option.
250 kph - with M-sport package #840 higher speed limiter option.

250 kph - all //M models. I am uncertain IF this also includes the 1M. ?
280 kph - for //M models that have been coded and the driver has gone thru the //M racing school.

Also note: that for some reason BMW tends to let M-models have an actuall (real) speed of 250 kph limit, while the speedo will read higher. For non M-models the speedo will only see 250 kph - so the actuall speed will be slower. I guess this is M's way of keeping M's more special.

WOW Impressive how linear its performance is. Impressive. By the way I don't like top speed either, it just freaks me out to much; I do prefer spirited driving on a late afternoon winding road....

What's so hard to believe folks? Just because the camera doesn't move?

Then here's a similar run on video with a shaky camera - http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529767 (with an even higher top speed reached - 270km/h (168mph)

All //M models can have the top speed increased to a "real" 280 kph instead of the standard 250 kph limit. You just have to go thru M-driving school and get your racing licsence. Then go to a German BMW dealer (show them your certificate) and pay them to code the 280 kph V-Max limiter in.

Or... get a tune.

Let's not forget the final drive ratio in the 1M is different as well.
