Another Fitment

I have searched through MANY threads without finding an answer.

I want to install Front: 18x8.5 with 225/40/18 (possible 235 if driveability is better) Rear: 18x9.5 with 255/35/18.

On all the threads, when someone asks about this size and what wheel is best in regards to offset, everyone gets off topic and offers different size tires.

Can anyone offer personal experience, KNOWLEDGEABLE from an installers experience, or as a vendor tell me the best offset for these size tires WITHOUT any fender rolling or mods. I do not plan on lowering it any just suspension upgrades.

Thanks in advance!

Lots of people run that size configuration, and I plan to do it myself when I switch back to summer tires. You should gets lots of answers. In my understanding, stock wheels (ET49 and ET52, IIRC) fit that fine, but that is second-hand knowledge.

Front should be +45 and rear should be +55 for a no-rub fitment with those tire sizes.

I dont think 18x8.5 with 225/40 is a common combination.

As you know, stock 135i fronts are 18x7.5 ET49 and 215/40. Most people keep the same 18x7.5 RIM, and move up to 225/40. This is what I did. Also went with a +1 upgrade in the rear on stock 18x8.5 ET52 wheels and 255/35 tires. This was my first street/track setup.

I later moved on to a square 255/35 tire setup, on four stock rear 18x8.5 ET52 wheels (10mm spacers and large camber in the front).

Look to VMR or Apex for optimal 18x8.5 ET45 and 18x9.5 ET58/ET62 RIM fitment with "stock" fenders + struts.

Here's an email exchage excerpt I had with Apex support back in 2013 ...

" We understand your pain, as many 1-series owners have this same issue. As mentioned earlier, the front wheel and tire fitment on a 1 series is extremely close on both the fender and strut side in the front thus requiring either camber plates or M3 front control arms if you want to use a 245/35/18 front tire to gain the necessary camber for fender clearance, and both camber plates/M3 front control arms if you want to use a 255/35/18 front tire. If a tire that is wider than 235/40/18 is being used a 3mm wheel spacer must also be installed, otherwise the tire will start rubbing the strut or spring perch. The rear is able to easily fit a 235/40/18 as well as 245/35/18 tire but once the step is made to a 255/35/18 tire fender rolling must be done in the rear. Since you have both the camber plates and M3 control arms, with the use of a spacer, the 255/35/18 RS3 will fit on your car as the widest tire fitment with an 18x8.5" ET45 squared if you're willing to keep your current alignment settings, and roll the rear fenders.

The rears are limited to the 265/35/18 tire size with the ET62 ARC-8 unless you roll the fenders. Even then, there are other issues that arise when using the 275/35/18 size which is why we do not recommend it. This is because when one isrunning a 275/35/18 rear extreme performance (ie. your RE-11's) or R-compound tires with the18x9.5" ET62 then the tire will likely contact the rear sub frame. This sub frame rub is only when the suspension is drooping (lifted in the air for service). The tires do not touch the sub frame when driving, but because there is contact, we do not recommend 275widthtires usually. The ideal setup for no issues is definitely the 265/35/18. You may have read about using a 275/35/18 rear tire before we were aware of how significant this problem is in the rear of the 1-series. It may be possible to fit the 275/35/18 rear tire with the use of a 5mm rear wheel spacer but at that point you are pushing the wheel/tire out very far and fender rubbing will very likely happenwithout heavy fender rolling.

2015 BMW M4  [0.00]
2013 BMW F30  [0.00]
2014 BMW F22  [0.00]
2013 BMW F06  [0.00]
We typically recommend :

8.5 ET45 + 225/40/18
9.5 ET45/ET50 + 245/35/18 or 255/35/18 (255 may require minor fender modification)

If you want to run a larger rear tire, we also offer our Flow-Form VMR V810 and V702 in 9.5 ET58. In most cases, 9.5 ET58 will allow for the use of 265/35/18 without any issues or modification.

tadams > I've had (3) 1ers and currently own (2). I've always used VMR's and here's whats worked for me:

No rubbing or fender rolling:
Front Size/Offset: 18x8.5 ET45 @ 225/40/18
Rear Size/Offset: 18x9.5 ET50 @ 255/35/18*

*Note: You can fit 265's with the fender's rolled.

This is what I will be running in a couple months, 225/40 is for sure a popular combo for 18x8.5 45 etc

Thanks everyone! These are the answers that have avoided me in the 100+ threads in the Wheels and Tires section. Its great to have personal feedback. Looks like the manufacturer is even easier to chose.

tadams > NP! That setup for sure will give your car a nice flush look, without the headaches.
