Thoughts on price of a used 135i?
I posted this in a different sub-section, but there doesn't seem to be much traffic, lol.
As a pseudo-introduction, I've been a long time lurker on this forum and have been an active member at E46Fanatics for 6 years. I'm currently in the market for a 135i and am considering a local one. What is everyones thoughts on the price? It's a 2011 with 45K miles and sport/premium/cold/Boston leather and Dinan stage 2 software along with fairly new tires. Also, the previous owner had the rear bike rack installed so there are two rectangular holes in the rear bumper. The price is $29,900 and the guy I spoke with at the test drive mentioned about $1-2K of "wiggle room." I'm taking it to my old BMW mechanic on Monday to get a pre-purchase inspection. Reasonable price? Thanks for the help! Link to full description: http://www.bmwautohaus.com/used/BMW/...5ab275ccc3.htm |

3 months ago I got a 2010 6MT 135i AW with 20k miles for 29600. The dealer had installed brand new tires after selling the set for 500+. I'm in FL and the car was in PA so I had them ship the car to me. Looking nationally was the only way I got exactly what I wanted.
Given the miles on that and the holes in the bumper I wouldn't go for more than 28, especially with his wiggle room comment, and that is being desperate. Talk to them about fixing the bumper and the cost of that (I would). This car has real leather and power seats which are the only 'upgrades' to what I have. I don't know what value they are putting on the tune, that is one thing to consider. It looks as if they've priced it so they could 'give' you 1-2k and still make plenty of money off of it. I would go even lower and then get them to cover the cost of the bumper.

2 months ago I got a Certified Preowned 2010 135i Convertible, sport/premium/cold/Boston leather with 25k miles for 29450. The dealer installed new tires. I financed it with their .9% financing which saves a ton of $.
A good place to start is BMW's own site. They have a listing of all CPO and used BMW's for sale at BMW dealers in the US. I would also recommend a CPO and only buy it at a BMW dealer. http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...lSearchRD.aspx |

Yeah, I'm definitely not a fan of the bumper holes for the rear bike rack. Depending on what the pre-purchase inspection renders, I'm thinking of coming in with an offer around $25-26K and seeing where they go from there.
Alternatively, I may just sell my car privately (aka, no trade in) and search nationally for a 135i. |

I'd question why they're not offering it as a CPO vehicle. I got mine for $500 more with i-drive, parking, lighting, comfort and CPO'd, with a few thousand less miles.
Also, this is going to be HUGE upgrade over both the E46 and MS6 - I've owned both. |

I recognize your name from E46F....I'm "evolved" over there, but it was already taken here. I'm planning on asking that when I get the PPI on Monday and then going back to the dealer and asking them the same question to see what the answer is. I was thinking more about it last night and I think my main points will be the holes in the back bumper, the high miles, warranty going away in 4k miles and whatever the results of the PPI might be. I don't think I want to pay anything north of $27K, pending the results of the PPI, of course. |

Well, I had the PPI done today from a reputable indy BMW mechanic and the results came back to be pretty positive. It needs new rear brakes, an alignment, e-brake adjustment (pulls pretty long) and a few other little things. I found out that it's not CPO because of the Dinan tune, which makes sense.
Now to work on the pricing.....They undershot me on my car, which I expected, at which point I told them that I'm in no hurry and I would sell my own car. I didn't mention price for the 135i and he asked me what I was thinking and I was pretty straight up. I said if they offered me $12,500 for my car and went down to below $27k for the 135i we'd have a deal.....so we'll see what kind of phone call/email I get. |

Honestly, I wouldn't pay more than 26k for that car... Just too many things I don't like about it.
When I buy a car, I like it to be completely stock. No tuning. No exterior mods. No "bumper holes". No BS. The mileage is also pretty high imo... Almost 50k in 2 years? lol I have a late 2009 (In service date early 2010) and it only has 24k on it. That car for sale has definitely been road tested and is probably subject to some wear and tear. If you really want it that badly, then go for it... but even if you missed out on this deal, I'm pretty confident that you'd find a better car in that same price range with very little effort in the near future. |

One thing I noticed when I was test driving was that the average MPH was 32 and the average MPG was 14.8, lol. I had assumed mostly highway miles but with those kind of numbers it sounds like he was gunning it from stop light to stop light.
I got an email follow up from the dealer offering me $10.5K (up 1.5k from the original offer) for my car, and $27.5K for their car. I'll probably end up selling my car to a friend of mine for $12K. I'm going to email the dealer and say $26K and I'll sell my car privately. If they don't bite my friend is in no hurry to purchase my car, so I can continue to look elsewhere. |

IMO, if they declined your offer, it would probably be a "Blessing" in disguise. That car was not-"grannied". lol Don't let anyone lie to you, or try to convince you of that. You simply don't granny a car with a DINAN chip, holes punched in the bumper, etc... It's highly unlikely. You are more inclined to drive it like a wild stallion and take it on long, grueling road trips in harsh weather conditions. At $26k, I might risk it... but even a penny over that, and I'd walk away tbh. As for the mileage/mph/mpg... well, it kinda speaks for itself in my eyes. There are way too many of these cars up for sale (and more about to hit the used car market soon) for buyers to have to "settle". This is not a Delorean, or some other kind of unique / hard to find vehicle. There are a plethora of manual 135's with that Black on Black exterior/interior combo... I believe it was one of the most popular color combinations. It's definitely up to you... but the car in question appears to be out of warranty, has high mileage (for its age), and multiple known modifications. I'd be willing to spend an extra $3-4k just to have a car without any of those issues... My Advice: Take your time. You'll "know" when you've found "the one". I know I did. |

AJx, fantastic piece of advice and I am getting the same feeling after I slept on it. The bumper holes are for a bike rack....I was confused about that at the beginning, lol.
I'm actually not even sold on black....my criteria for the car is 2010+, silver/gray/black/blue exterior, harmon kardon, m-sport, manual, heated seats. Premium package and ipod connectivity would be a plus, but not a deal breaker. |

the original asking was 29950 I believe. It's a DCT with paddle shifter.
but yeah, it was a fantastic deal. the exact car I was looking for, minus the wood trim. not a fan of it. would rather alpine white to match the body. |

I think the price is reasonable with a little in the dealers favor. I have a 2011 with 7 speed dct and every option but comfort axis. I have about 21k miles on it and a lot of money in suspension modifications. I had been considering selling my car but I was not going to take less than $33000. Mine has a lot less miles, more options, more modifications, and a extended warantee for another six years but I don't know that I would get what I want. Make sure the car is what you want and not just what was around. I looked for mine for a long time before I found a non engine modded low miles DCT 135 with the color and options I wanted. Good luck and don't be afraid to walk from the table if it not what you want, your car is probably a major part of your life.

My favorite BMW color option was Sparkling Graphite (kind of a dark-ish Metallic Gray). I owned a E46 330ci in that color prior to my 135i and constantly received compliments on the car. Took me 2 months to find the exact color that I wanted with all the options I had been looking for... Only thing I didn't really like about it was the interior wood trim (not my personal preference), but that was always removable / swap-able. Stuff like "high mileage" and "bumper holes" can't be swapped though... well, not with ease at least. |
