Some of you really need to understand the difference in methodology between: JD Power, Consumer Reports & True Delta.

This thread of devolved into ranting on Consumer Reports. Really?

What we should be comparing is the 128i to the 228i with track pack and both with 6MT. THEN I am up for a debate. Until then, silence.

I haven't driven the 228i with the track package, but I want to. From what I know it's the closest to the 128i there is. Anyone have significant experience with both?

Finally, I've owned two x28s, an E90 328xi and now the 128i. The NA I6 seems pretty bullet proof and awesome. I don't think the piped-in sound of the blown-I4 can compete. BUT, 35MPG on the highway would be nice.

Anyway, enough with the CR (and each other) bashing, please.

Thanks!

I feel the opposite, have you looked at the front grille in person on or the bmw site? It is really the only model BMW using that grille. And it looks pathetically small and similar to other cheaper brands. At least the rear has true dual exhaust and I'm sure a good rear end diffuser would look nice since there is so much room to play with in the bottom insert.

Not in love with the 2 series like i was with the 1. And thats a major thing to over come. I'll never understand how a M235i comes with the same transmission as others in its series. I know we got lucky with 2012 135i's and up to get the DCT, still not sure why we got that trans. But I'd expect if you are M'ing a 235i a DCT would be part of it...

You'd think a professional auto review would note that BMW clearly has a strategy which is to fill as many niches as it can find, so the question is what's the 228i niche? I think all of the qualities cited in the article where just as intended by BMW. It's a small, aspirational luxury coupe that looks and feels kind of sporty, but not really. Throw in x-drive and this basically a car for people who want a small BMW for the badge and relative comfort, but not much else (the alternative was a Lexus). I would say that BMW is expecting the most likely buyer to be a female professional. The 235i, on the other hand, has a different niche and it would be more interesting for them to have also reviewed that because that's the car which is supposed to be more true to the BMW's earlier heritage which BMW played up with their original comparison of the 1 with the 2002.

Between x-drive or not, convertible or not, manual transmission or not, track pack or not, that a pretty huge 'niche'. How did you come up with car for a female professional from the span of those options? Granted, it's probably pretty difficult to impossible to get a test drive in a non-xdrive, manual 228i with a track pack.

fortunately I would never hang out with a 'consumer reports enthusiast' so I am spared the impending drama of boredom that conversation would be.

Basically looks like supply and demand lottery starts now for e82/88. Never had a car that may actually appreciate during ownership. Leading to this (rhetorical)question should I put a cover over her now and wait 15yrs?
thanks for the link , i'm surprised i haven't seen that before.

I don't think the demand for 1's is going to make them appreciate quite yet but maybe 10 years from now clean examples will go up in value. 20 years from now, the design alone will make it more collectible.

also, in response to the poster above who said the back end of the 2 series looks asian-y, i think the same can be said about all bmw models front and back, especially the m versions. seems like they're slowly abandoning the clean german aesthetic of older bmws. i really miss the clean straight lines of the e46 m3. maybe they want to appeal to growing chinese markets, or they're trying to hard to appear modern?

You're making the same argument many made when the 1 was introduced in for 2008: it was a 'badge' car for women who just wanted to say they had a BMW. And look what we got: the last classic BMW.

I think BMW has made a lot of missteps, but I disagree that the 1 (or 2) is just a car designed for people who want the prestige of having a BMW. Aside from the fact that 70% of 1er owners thought their car was FWD.

Many buyers of the 128i were women, in fact most of the people I see driving 128is are women. BMW has doubled down on that niche by added x-drive to the 228i. It's not intended to be very sporty. The 135 on the other hand had a different market and was intended to be sporty - too sporty perhaps as BMW didn't want it upstaging the M3 which it could well have done had it been given the same basic parts later given to the 1M. The question is how much have they dumbed down the 235i? Now it has to not only be less capable than an M4, it also has to be less than the presumptive M2.

Well I had a 135i and now have an M235i. From all the reviews on the car plus my own experiences, it has made the M3 & M4 redundant. If BMW comes out with an M2, it'll be overkill!

But if people want to spend an extra $30K for an M3 or M4, they should go for it, but I think they'll be disappointed in "extra" performance.
