Extending Apple Y Cable

I have a Y but would like to extend it but before I buy a Lightning extension cable to plug on to the end of the Y cable has anyone done this and does it work?
Thanks

I think you mean plug a30 pin to lightning adapter into the bmw y cable. Yes, I have done this with an Apple approved lightning adapter and have no integration issues and maintain full function on head unit. I don't think eBay cable would work 100%.

To extend from usb and aux I used a usb male female extender and a male female 3.5mm cable, again, no integration issues.

Thanks for the reply, I am aware of the Apple converter for the 30 pin Y cable I have but I also have a USB+3.5mm to Lightening plug BMW cable and want to know if I can plug an extension cable on to this for when I use my phone as a Nav screen but want to keep it on charge,

The Lightning y-cable is new enough (and expensive enough) to probably not have that many users in the real world yet, and those that do have them have probably not gone about extending it yet.

That said, I don't think that there will be any problems if you pick up a good extension cable. Lightning seems like it would be more cooperative to extend than the 30pin since there are less connectors to worry about.

I didn't know these existed. Where did you get it?

Oh, I didn't know that existed. Cool!

Why wouldn't you just extend the usb and 3.5mm plugs rather than the lightning end? I appreciate the perhaps cosmetic appeal or the thinner lightning cable, but I would assume you need an Apple cable for that so that the digital signatures etc are maintained in the cable.

Correct, just easier to run a single Lightning cable up to the dash storage area. Will post the part number up later.

Ok so the Lightning cable extension works a treat but the newer Y cable sounds distorted when compared with the original Y cable paired with the the Apple 30 pin socket to lightning plug cable.

Anyone else had this issue with the newer cable?

I'm about to order the BMW Lightning Y cable (part: 61-12-2-287-642), but I'm also considering a 3rd party bluetooth receiver that uses the same connections under the armrest.

Are you satisfied with your Lightning Y cable? Any compatibility or sound quality issues?

Gave up with the Y cable as it was prone to distortion, I took it back to the dealer and tried another but same issue. So I reverted to the original Y cable with the the short Apple cable that is Lightning connection one end and 30 pin LOD connection on the other this is a little more practical than their little adaptor.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to give the .2m Apple Lightning -> 30 pin cable a try. If that doesn't do the trick I'll probably go the bluetooth route with a Tune2Air setup:
