How in the world are you going to spill transmission fluid while changing the clutch delay valve?

Yeah that question was worded totally wrong - I'm trying to find out what the correct fluid is in case I don't cap the hose fast enough when I replace the CDV. Have never read what BMW is using for clutch hydraulic fluid. Don't want to commingle 2 fluids that might not be compatible. I looked in the manual but did not see and clutch MC fluids listed. Unless I just missed it.

BMW uses the same system for both the brakes and the clutch. It even shares the same reservoir. That is why you didn't see anything on the listing.

Thanks. That makes it simple. I even still have a bottle of OEM BMW DOT 4 Brake Fluid.

Its clear to me no one has done this diff oil change - yet.

Does anyone even know the exact gear oil specs we should use? I'ave tried searching but have come up empty. GL4 or GL5? What grade? 75w90?

What about for the oil specs for the manual trans? On my e36 323i I used Redline's D4 ATF dextron III. For the diff I used Redline's MTL 75w90.

Anyone know the specs we should run?

Btw... I have the Griot's Garage fluid extractor - it works VERY well. It comes with THREE dia tygon tubing - for getting the oil out of the stick. I plan on using this fluid extractor for my diff oil change too.

So.... who knows the spec answers to our cars gear oil? ???

Looking for the same info. I plan on changing out MT gear oil, diff oil, and having a coolant flush done. Went to the local BMW parts department today to buy OEM fluids, new spark plugs and oil for everything listed above, but they are closed on Sundays. I know we're limited to the OEM spark plugs for now, but if anyone knows of any aftermarket fluids and their specs, please let me know. Thanks.

I just searched google and the M5 e39 forum, I found this:

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...w-store-2.html

part names/numbers

Esso/Exxon MTF-LT-1 BMW P/N 83 22 9 408 942

MTF-LT-2 Fluid BMW P/N 83 22 0 309 031

MTF-LT-3 BMW P/N 83 22 7 533 818

looks like MTF-LT3 is what we need. Superceeds the older spec I & II oils. Still looking for the diff oil. And ohh... this stuff is sold on BravAuto for like $170 for five liter jug!!!! OUCH!!!!

The hydraulic clutch uses DOT-4 Brake fluid.

The Manual tarns uses BMW LL3. Some say Dextron-III or VI ATF will work. I would only use what BMW syas to use! ie: Long Life-3 trans oil. about $175 for a five liter jug.

It sounds like you think they use the same fluid? Why would you only do the job half way?
